Emmanuel Macron Welcomes Lebanon-Israel Ceasefire, Urges Restraint

The CSR Journal Magazine

French President Emmanuel Macron has acknowledged the recently established 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, which has been termed a truce between Hezbollah and Israel. His statements came following its announcement by US President Donald Trump. Macron used social media platform X to express his full support for the ceasefire, while simultaneously raising concerns about the potential undermining of the agreement due to ongoing military operations.

In his post, Macron underscored the critical need to safeguard civilian lives on both sides of the Lebanon-Israel border. He reiterated, “I fully support the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel as announced by President Trump yesterday,” while cautioning that the truce risks being compromised amid continued violence. He has called for all involved parties to exercise restraint.

Additionally, Macron urged Hezbollah to relinquish its weapons and encouraged Israel to respect Lebanese sovereignty as part of efforts to end the longstanding conflict. He declared, “Hezbollah must renounce its weapons. Israel must respect Lebanese sovereignty and stop the war,” indicating a call for lasting peace in the region.

Details of the Ceasefire Agreement

The ceasefire deal arrives during a time of heightened tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border, where conflicts between Israeli armed forces and Hezbollah have escalated, particularly following the recent US-Iran war. President Trump announced the agreement after extensive diplomatic discussions aimed at reducing hostilities in the area.

Trump confirmed having productive conversations with both Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating that both leaders are committed to the temporary ceasefire as a vital step towards achieving broader peace. He noted that the ceasefire would formally commence at 5 p.m. EST, thereby allowing for necessary de-escalation.

In his communication, Trump remarked, “I just had excellent conversations with the highly respected President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon, and Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu of Israel.” His remarks highlight the diplomatic efforts that led to this agreement, which aims to lower tensions in a historically volatile area.

Qatar’s Support for the Ceasefire

The State of Qatar has also welcomed the announcement of the ceasefire, characterising it as a critical step towards de-escalation in the region. In an official statement released on 17 April, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs encouraged all parties to fully comply with the ceasefire agreement to ensure continued peace and to avoid further escalation.

The statement expressed gratitude for the diplomatic efforts spearheaded by President Trump, recognising his role in mediating the agreement. “The State of Qatar welcomes the ceasefire in the Republic of Lebanon as a step towards de-escalation, urging full and immediate compliance to maintain calm,” the ministry noted.

Furthermore, Qatar expressed hopes that the ceasefire would strengthen wider regional and international initiatives aimed at achieving a comprehensive and sustainable peace in the Middle East. This comes at a crucial moment, as the region seeks stability after a period marked by significant unrest along the Israel-Lebanon border.
