Election Commission Schedules By-Elections for Assembly Seats in Bihar, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the dates for by-elections in three significant Assembly constituencies located in Bihar, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. This notification was issued on July 6, 2026, revealing that polling will occur on July 30, 2026. The constituencies involved are 182-Bankipur in Bihar, 145-Manjalpur in Gujarat, and 22-Datia in Madhya Pradesh.

Election Timeline and Procedures

The ECI has outlined a detailed schedule for the upcoming elections. The nomination process is set to commence, with the final date for filing nominations being July 13, 2026. Following this, the scrutiny of nomination papers will occur on July 14. Candidates who wish to withdraw their nominations have until July 16 to do so. According to the commission, voting is slated to take place from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM on the designated date, and the entire electoral process is expected to conclude by August 4, 2026.

The by-elections have been necessitated due to various political developments in each of the respective states. In Bihar, the Bankipur constituency has remained vacant since March 30, 2026, following the resignation of its previous member, Nitin Nabin.

In Gujarat, the Manjalpur seat needs to be filled following the death of Yogeshbhai Narandas Patel on June 2, 2026. The ECI has initiated the by-poll to ensure the continuity of representation for the constituents.

Similarly, in Madhya Pradesh, the Datia seat became vacant as a result of the disqualification of Rajendra Bharti on April 2, 2026. This disqualification was enacted under Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, in conjunction with Article 191(1)(e) of the Constitution of India.

State Government Notifications

To ensure that the voting public is well-informed, the respective state governments have made the ECI’s notification available in their extraordinary gazettes. This action aims to bring clarity to stakeholders and the general populace regarding the electoral process.

The ECI’s formal announcement and the subsequent procedures reflect the organisation’s commitment to uphold the democratic process and maintain transparency. The polling dates and timelines have been established to facilitate a clear understanding of the electoral activities leading up to the by-elections.

As the election date approaches, constituents in these constituencies await the opportunity to select their representatives for the remaining term of the legislative assembly. The significance of these by-elections lies not only in filling vacated seats but also in reinforcing the democratic framework within which these states operate.
