Doctors at Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurugram successfully removed more than eight thousand gallstones from a 70-year-old man’s abdomen, providing him relief after enduring over five years of chronic pain and discomfort.
“The patient was in extreme pain when he landed in the emergency room. We ensured a careful dissection and conducted the surgery,” said Dr Javed. Dr Javed also said that the patient was initially reluctant to seek any treatment. “Upon admission, the ultrasound of the abdomen was conducted which revealed a densely packed gallbladder, looking at the condition. The team of doctors immediately performed a minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to remove the massive numbers of gallstones. The surgery was completed in an hour, and the patient was discharged in stable condition within two days,” added Dr Javed.
The surgical team, led by Dr. Amit Javed, Senior Director of Gastrointestinal Oncology, and Dr. Narola Yanger, Principal Consultant for GI, GI Oncology, Minimal Access, and Bariatric Surgery, performed a minimally invasive laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The procedure lasted approximately one hour, and the patient was discharged in stable condition within two days.
Post-surgery, the medical team undertook the meticulous task of counting the extracted gallstones, which totaled 8,125.
Gallstones are often composed of cholesterol and are commonly associated with obesity and high-cholesterol diets. This case underscores the importance of timely medical intervention and the advancements in minimally invasive surgical techniques that can effectively address complex medical conditions.
