Bengaluru Club Kitchen Shut After Seizure of 40 Kg Expired Chillies

The CSR Journal Magazine

A renowned club in Bengaluru has had its kitchen closed following a food safety inspection that uncovered serious hygiene violations and the seizure of 40 kg of expired chillies. According to officials, the inspection was conducted on September 1, 2026, by the Food Safety wing of the Department of Food Safety and Drug Administration, under the directive of Health Minister UT Khader.

Inspectors from the department discovered that a substantial quantity of expired chillies was stored for food preparation at the Chairman’s Club. Additionally, the inspection revealed improper labelling practices with 5 kg of breadcrumbs and 2 kg of Sajeera food products, which contravenes the standards set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

The authorities noted that the food preparation and storage areas within the kitchen were maintained under highly unsanitary conditions. This inspection has raised significant concerns regarding food safety and hygiene in the establishment.

Hygiene Violations and Unauthorised Products

During the food safety inspection, inspectors uncovered the presence of unauthorised or prohibited artificial colours in the food products. The club’s management reportedly did not adhere to essential food safety protocols related to the proper storage and handling of food items, further compounding the issues identified during the visit.

It was also noted that vegetarian and non-vegetarian products were allegedly stored together, which could lead to cross-contamination and is against food safety guidelines. Given these findings, officials described the overall maintenance of the kitchen as inadequate and concerning.

According to Srinivas K, Commissioner of the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department, the club kitchen was closed due to significant deficiencies in hygiene and food safety practices. He stated, “During the inspection, the kitchen was found to be maintained under unhygienic conditions. Expired food products were found and seized. In view of the serious deficiencies relating to food safety and hygiene, the club kitchen was closed.”

Ongoing Inspections and Future Measures

The Department of Food Safety and Drug Administration has announced that inspections across Bengaluru will continue as part of an effort to uphold food safety standards. Officials have confirmed that stringent legal actions will be pursued against food businesses that fail to comply with prescribed food safety and hygiene regulations.

In a commitment to public health, the department aims to ensure that all food establishments maintain high standards of hygiene and safety in food preparation and storage. This incident at the Chairman’s Club serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to food safety protocols.

The actions taken against the Bengaluru club reflect a broader initiative to monitor food safety across the city, ensuring that businesses operate within the guidelines set forth by the relevant authorities. Future inspections are expected to promote compliance and protect consumer health.
