DRDO Upgrades Archer-NG Unmanned Aerial Vehicle for Modern Warfare

India is advancing its defence capabilities with the upgrade of the Archer-NG, an indigenous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This next-generation platform is being transformed from a medium-altitude long-endurance drone focused on intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) into a versatile combat system. The changes align with the rapidly evolving nature of warfare and the complexities of contemporary battlefields.

The Archer-NG was initially designed to carry out ISR missions. However, its development now includes enhancements that will enable it to conduct combat operations against both ground and aerial targets. DRDO officials have indicated that the current phase of development focuses on integrating advanced ISR functionalities. This includes high-resolution electro-optical and infrared sensors, synthetic aperture radar, and secure high-bandwidth data links. Extended Flight Duration and Operational Altitude

The upgraded UAV is expected to achieve an endurance exceeding 18 hours and operate at service ceilings above 30,000 feet. Such capabilities will facilitate long-duration missions in a variety of operational environments, further enhancing its utility in both peacetime monitoring and combat scenarios.

The next step in the Archer-NG’s development will focus on its weaponisation and ability to perform multi-role functions. The drone is being calibrated to carry precision-guided munitions, anti-tank guided missiles, and air-to-air armaments. These enhancements are intended to support counter-UAV efforts and allow for precise strike operations against identified targets.

In line with technological advancements, DRDO is integrating artificial intelligence for target recognition. This feature will allow the Archer-NG to coordinate seamlessly with manned fighter aircraft and other unmanned systems. Such integration is vital for future operations in network-centric warfare environments, where efficient communication between various platforms is critical.
