Because of the upcoming two major repair and upgrade operations in the South and Central Delhi districts of the capital city, the Delhi Jal Board has issued a public notice confirming a plant shutdown of the functioning of key water pipelines and disruption for up to 24 hours in several areas. These operations are undertaken by the Delhi Jal Board and are part of an ongoing infrastructural strengthening program aimed at improving long-term water delivery efficiency, especially before the monsoon season.
The Delhi Jal Board will be interconnecting a newly installed 1000 mm diameter water pipeline at three locations of South Delhi, namely Deer Park pumping station, near the 11T Gate number two Aurobindo Marg, and thirdly, adjacent to the PWD store on Aurobindo Marg. The work is aimed to enhance supply reliability across high-density residential pockets, many of which have been dependent on the already ageing infrastructure in the area.
Areas Affected
Delhi Jal Board officials also noted that as a result of the shutdown, some localities like Mehrauli, Township, Sarvapriya Vihar, Begumpur, Kalu Sarai, Sarvodaya Enclave, Vijay Mandal, DDA Flats, Azad Apartment, Chhattarpur, Katwaria Sarai, Qutub Industrial Area, and other surrounding areas in the Central and North Delhi region will receive water at significantly reduced pressure from the evening of May 31 till the morning of June 1.
Parallelly, the Delhi Jal Board has also undertaken civil work to address urban flooding challenges under the Tilak Bridge near the IT area. The 900 mm Kilokari main pipeline is being considered for elevation to throw water out during monsoon. Currently, the pipeline obstructs water flow in Drain Number 12 near Hans Bhavan and has been a chronic concern for years during the monsoon season. The waterlogging is such that it often becomes severe near high-traffic intersections and government precincts.
