‘Did They Come Dancing and Singing?’: Rajasthan Minister’s Remark on Ailing Mothers Goes Viral

Rajasthan Health Minister Gajendra Singh’s controversial remark related to the recent incident at the PBM Hospital in Bikaner, where six women developed complications and kidney failure after deliveries at the hospital, has gone viral. During a media interaction at the hospital in Bikaner where he had gone for inspection.

Gajendra Singh’s controversial statement on women patients

“Did these pregnant women arrive at PBM Hospital in a critical condition, or did they come dancing and singing?”. Immediately realizing that the statement could create controversy, he said to the Medical College Principal Dr Surendra Verma, “You tell them—did these pregnant women arrive at PBM in a critical condition, or did they come dancing and singing?”

The Minister was speaking to the media about the six mothers’ kidney failure case in Bikaner’s government hospital. He was on a round to inspect the ICU where this case happened recently.

The controversial statement made by the Health Minister was intended to establish that the women were already unwell when they reached hospital.

Kidney failure following C-section deliveries

This statement came amidst the incidents of kidney failure after delivery and also death after delivery in Rajasthan. In May shocking incidents of deaths after delivery came from Kota hospital and last week similar cases of kidney failure came from Bikaner hospital.

In Kota five women died at the government hospital in Kota, after C-section deliveries at a medical college. Investigation has revealed that there were many lapses at the hospital such as post-operative monitoring, deficiencies in hygiene and infection-control measures in ICU, and the biggest issue was substandard Oxytocin injections monitored on all the women.

And in this latest incident, six new mothers’ kidneys failed after C-section deliveries at PBM Hospital in Bikaner.

Protest & criticism

During the visit of the health minister, youth congress workers staged a protest outside the hospital premises. Police did lathi-charge as the workers tried to enter the hospital forcefully. Apart from the youth workers, mahila congress workers also staged protests outside the hospital main gate.

The former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot called the statement ‘shameful and unfortunate’, and alleged that instead of fixing accountability, the government is attempting to suppress the opposition’s voice through force.

RLP chief Hanuman Beniwal, posted on social media tagging Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and wrote, “One cannot expect such an insensitive remark from a person entrusted with the responsibility for the health of the mothers and sisters.”
