Delhi-NCR Experiences Gusty Thunderstorm on June 4, 2026

The gusty thunderstorm that struck Delhi-NCR on June 4, 2026, brought much-needed rain and a drop in temperatures, alleviating the oppressive heat experienced in the region. While this weather event was positively received for its cooling effects, it also caused temporary disruptions in several areas. A nowcast warning issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated the likelihood of thunderstorms, moderate rain, lightning, and gusty winds of 30 to 50 km/h across multiple locations in the capital and its surroundings.

Regions affected by the thunderstorm included Narela, Alipur, Burari, Badli, Model Town, Karawal Nagar, and Delhi University, among others. In addition to these areas, parts of Loni Dehat in the National Capital Region were also impacted. The weather event, while beneficial in terms of cooling, disrupted daily activities throughout the affected regions.

Causes Behind the Thunderstorm

According to meteorologists, the thunderstorm was generated by a combination of factors involving intense daytime heating, abundant moisture, and advantageous upper-air conditions. For several days leading up to the event, the Delhi-NCR region had been experiencing hot and humid weather. This created an ideal environment for the accumulation of heat energy near the surface, which contributed to the rapid ascent of warm air into the atmosphere as temperatures increased during the daytime.

Moisture-laden winds originating from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal added the necessary humidity for cloud formation. When this warm, moist air ascended and met cooler air at higher altitudes, it resulted in the rapid development of towering cumulonimbus clouds, which are typically responsible for severe weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.

The storm was reportedly intensified by the presence of a western disturbance over northern India, which is known to enhance atmospheric instability. Such disturbances often interact with moist lower-level winds, leading to increased convective activity across the northwest plains, including Delhi-NCR.

Consequences and Precautions

The thunderstorm produced strong downdrafts inside the storm clouds, which were responsible for the sudden gusty winds experienced by residents throughout the capital. Some areas also reported hailstones reaching the ground, a result of ice particle formation within the upper sections of the storm clouds.

While the rainfall significantly lowered temperatures and improved comfort levels after a period of oppressive heat, meteorologists urged caution about the inherent risks associated with pre-monsoon thunderstorms. These events can be highly localized and intense, presenting dangers such as lightning strikes, falling trees, and temporary waterlogging in some areas.

With the southwest monsoon progressing across various parts of India, the IMD anticipates that similar instances of thunderstorm activity will persist in the Delhi-NCR region in the coming days. This continued weather pattern is expected to help maintain lower temperatures and bring occasional spells of rain and gusty winds, contributing to the ongoing weather transition of the season.
