Delhi Government Introduces Rs 2,500 Monthly Aid for Economically Weaker Women

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi government is preparing to launch the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana, which will provide eligible women from economically disadvantaged backgrounds with a monthly aid of Rs 2,500. This initiative aligns with the celebrations of Raksha Bandhan and is scheduled for formal rollout on August 28, 2026. It is anticipated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may be involved in the inauguration of the programme.

Financial Allocations and Expected Beneficiaries

The Delhi government has allocated Rs 5,110 crore for the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana in its 2026-27 Budget. Officials project that between 20 and 22 lakh women across the national capital will benefit from this financial assistance. Preparations for the programme are reportedly nearing completion, with the online registration portal already developed and eligibility criteria established.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has emphasised her administration’s objective of ensuring a smooth rollout of the scheme. The government intends to implement the programme only after confirming that all logistical arrangements are in place, thus allowing eligible women to access the financial aid without any bureaucratic difficulties.

To qualify for the assistance, applicants must fulfil certain conditions stipulated by the government. The eligibility requirements specify that women need to be permanent residents of Delhi, aged between 21 and 60 years, and have an annual family income ranging from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh. The scheme aims to prioritise women who possess ration cards during the enrolment process.

Exclusions and Registration Process

The Mahila Samriddhi Yojana will not extend financial support to women who are employed in government positions, those who pay income tax, recipients of government pensions, and individuals who own four-wheeled vehicles. This selection criteria has been established to ensure that the scheme benefits those who are most in need of assistance.

Registration for the programme will only be conducted online, streamlining the application process for potential beneficiaries. Women wishing to apply must provide a range of details, including their Aadhaar number, Aadhaar-linked bank account information, mobile number, date of birth, marital status, proof of residence, and a self-declaration form confirming their eligibility.

The implementation of this scheme represents an effort by the Delhi government to support economically weaker women and enhance their financial stability. By providing direct financial assistance, the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana aims to empower women in the national capital, giving them greater independence and enabling them to improve their quality of life.
