Delhi Chief Minister Requests National Highway Designation for Mandi Road

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has addressed a formal request to Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, seeking the designation of Mandi Road as a National Highway. The 8.8-kilometre stretch located in South Delhi would, according to Gupta, be better developed if managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

The Chief Minister elaborated in her letter that such a designation would facilitate integrated development of the road, enhance engineering standards, and enable more timely infrastructure improvements. Mandi Road serves as a crucial link between NH-148A, near the Chhatarpur Metro Station, and the Gurugram-Faridabad Road at the boundary between Delhi and Haryana.

Strategic Importance of Mandi Road

Gupta highlighted the strategic significance of Mandi Road as a vital corridor connecting Delhi, Gurugram, and Faridabad. The road reportedly plays an essential role in easing inter-state traffic within the National Capital Region (NCR). This would help streamline the movement of vehicles and could potentially benefit daily commuters travelling between these key metropolitan areas.

During the 68th meeting of the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning & Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC) on September 27, 2023, the proposal for the comprehensive development and widening of Mandi Road received positive feedback. Gupta believes that formal recognition as a National Highway would lead to enhanced connectivity across the NCR, contributing to regional economic growth.

Gupta has asserted that improved infrastructure is paramount for the welfare of the citizens. The Chief Minister indicated that the governance structure, with BJP at both the Centre and the Delhi government, has created a conducive environment for executing large-scale infrastructure projects. She stated that this is an auspicious time for enhancing the city’s infrastructure.

Criticism of Previous Administration

In her remarks regarding the previous administration led by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Gupta has been critical of their performance in terms of development initiatives. She alleged that the former government failed to address key infrastructural challenges in Delhi, particularly concerning the city’s waste management and landfill sites.

The current administration has committed to fulfilling developmental targets with the backing of the ruling party, according to Gupta. She claimed that her government is working diligently to improve urban amenities and ensure better living conditions for the people of Delhi. Gupta expressed confidence that with the new measures proposed, the road will play a significant role in enhancing the transportation network.

If the request for National Highway status is granted, it is anticipated that the development will lead to improved road connectivity for Delhi, Gurugram, and Faridabad. Traffic flow on one of South Delhi’s major routes is expected to become more efficient, showcasing the government’s efforts to enhance transportation infrastructure.
