Dehradun Zoo Steps Up Heatwave Protection Measures For Animals Amid Rising Temperatures

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Dehradun Zoo in Uttarakhand has increased its efforts to protect its animals from the severe heatwave impacting northern India, notably in Delhi and Dehradun. Significant steps have been taken to improve the comfort and safety of the zoo’s inhabitants during this period of elevated temperatures, which has become critical as the mercury rises.

Zoo authorities are employing a variety of initiatives, including the operation of fountains throughout the premises. Tarpaulins are being utilised to cover enclosures, effectively shielding the animals from direct sunlight. Moreover, regular water spraying is being implemented to maintain a cool atmosphere and appropriate humidity levels within the animals’ living spaces.

According to Range Officer Mohan Singh Rawat, these measures are a response to the heightened vulnerability of animals during extreme weather conditions. He noted the urgency of creating an environment that mitigates the effects of the intense heat.

Specific Arrangements for Animal Welfare

As part of a comprehensive strategy to combat heat stress, birds are receiving special cooling foods, such as cucumbers and watermelons, which aim to sustain their hydration levels. Water holes and bathing facilities have been set up for various species, including emus, ostriches, tigers, and bears, enabling them to cope more effectively with the sweltering climate.

Rawat explained that animals inevitably suffer during high temperatures, prompting various measures within the zoo to mitigate these impacts. He mentioned that fountains are operational and that half of the bird enclosures are covered to prevent direct sunlight exposure. Additionally, water is routinely sprayed across the enclosures for added cooling effects.

In terms of visitor impact, more than 5,000 tourists are reported to visit the zoo daily during the summer, further necessitating enhanced animal care measures.

Nationwide Response from Other Zoos

Other zoos across India are also implementing precautionary measures to ensure the health and safety of animals amid ongoing heatwave conditions. At the Shri Sayajibaug Zoological Park in Vadodara, officials have taken steps to protect animals and birds from heat-related stress and dehydration.

Zoo Curator Pratyush Patankar stated that preparations have intensified due to a heatwave alert issued by the Meteorological Department, indicating temperatures could surpass 43 degrees Celsius over the following ten days. The zoo has introduced various cooling methods, including water sprays, ice blocks, foggers, and hydration supplements for the animals.

In Bathinda, similar arrangements have been established to safeguard local zoo animals from the effects of rising temperatures. Officials have issued guidelines to ensure adherence to care protocols during severe weather conditions. Dr Vijay Kumar, Assistant Director at the Bathinda Animal Husbandry Department, confirmed that precautions have been taken in conjunction with forest authorities to protect animal welfare.

Dr Kumar highlighted that the department oversees health services for the animals, issuing advisories regarding the potential negative impacts of heatwaves. It has adopted practices such as providing constant access to water and scheduling feeding times in the cooler morning and evening hours.

Veterinary officers are stationed at various zoos to ensure timely treatment for any wildlife requiring medical attention. Consistent water access, regulated feeding schedules, and cooling facilities are stressed as fundamental components of animal welfare during this challenging period of heat exposure.
