Daochier I Imchen Claims Victory in Koridang Bypoll, Becomes Youngest MLA of Nagaland

The CSR Journal Magazine

Daochier I Imchen, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominee, successfully secured the by-election for the Koridang assembly constituency in Nagaland. The Election Commission announced his victory on May 4, 2026, reporting that Imchen achieved a total of 7,317 votes, outpacing his closest rival by a margin of 3,123 votes.

Independent candidate Toshikaba garnered 4,194 votes, while another Independent nominee, Imtiwapang, finished in third place with 3,633 votes. I Abenjang, representing the National People’s Party (NPP), received 3,219 votes. The Indian National Congress candidate, T Chalukumba Ao, secured a mere 144 votes, and 48 votes were cast in favour of the None of the Above (NOTA) option.

Younger Legislator in the Assembly

With this victory, Daochier I Imchen enters the 14th Nagaland Assembly, becoming its youngest member at the age of 35. His win is perceived as a continuation of the political legacy established by his late father, Imkong L Imchen, who held the position of MLA five times. This familial connection is expected to play a significant role in his legislative efforts.

Imchen maintained a notable lead throughout the polling process, demonstrating particular strength in the Mangmetong and Longkhum areas. His ability to consolidate support in these regions contributed decisively to his overall win. The results reflect his sustained engagement with the electorate and his focus on local issues.

The reported turnout and enthusiasm for Imchen’s candidacy suggest that the BJP is solidifying its foothold in the region, further complicating the political landscape of Nagaland. Observers note that his victory could influence future electoral dynamics and party strategies in the state.

Significance of the By-Election

This by-election was necessitated by the passing of Imkong L Imchen, highlighting the personal aspect of political representation. His death left a significant void in the Koridang constituency, and Daochier’s success in filling that role may resonate deeply with constituents who supported his father’s previous campaigns.

The political climate in Nagaland has been shifting, with various parties vying for influence amid changing voter expectations. Imchen’s victory may signal a breaking of new ground for the BJP in a state traditionally dominated by regional and independent candidates. His ascension could lead to an increased focus on the issues that resonate with younger voters, perhaps altering the traditional political engagement patterns.

As the newest legislator in Nagaland, Imchen faces the challenge of living up to the expectations set by his family’s political legacy while addressing the needs of his constituents. The forthcoming legislative session will provide an opportunity for him to outline his vision and priorities as he begins his term in office.
