The CSR Journal Magazine

Raakh is an upcoming crime thriller that draws inspiration from the notorious Ranga-Billa case, which is one of India’s most shocking criminal incidents. This series revisits the tragic events surrounding the abduction and murder of siblings Geeta and Sanjay Chopra in 1978, exploring the shocking impact on the nation and detailing the ensuing investigation. The portrayal of the infamous criminals is a focal point of the storyline.

Actors Behind the Notorious Characters

Portraying the characters based on Ranga and Billa are actors Akash Makhija and Ramandeep Yadav. Makhija has previously appeared in various television shows, including Sargam Ki Sadhe Satii and the recent web series Gram Chikitsalay, where he played the role of Gobind, a villager. Meanwhile, Ramandeep Yadav has built a career in both film and web series, featuring in projects such as Manmarziyaan and Gadar 2. Both actors bring experience and skill to their roles.

Akash Makhija recently tied the knot with his childhood friend, Roshni Budhiraja, earlier this year. His commitment to diverse roles has made him a familiar face in Indian entertainment. Ramandeep Yadav, originating from Chandigarh, has expanded his repertoire across various formats and is also known for his passion for cricket, representing the Chandigarh district in local tournaments.

The characters Makhija and Yadav portray are based on Kuljeet Singh, referred to as Ranga, and Jasbir Singh, known as Billa. The series seeks to provide insight into the chilling realities behind these infamous figures, spotlighting the events that shocked the nation decades ago. This approach is part of a broader trend in storytelling that reflects on actual criminal cases.

Details of the Ranga-Billa Case

The Ranga-Billa case, formally known as the Geeta and Sanjay Chopra kidnapping and murder case, unfolded on August 26, 1978. The siblings, aged 16 and 14, departed from their home in Dhaula Kuan, Delhi, to attend a programme at All India Radio but never arrived. They were reportedly abducted by Ranga and Billa, who forced them into a stolen vehicle, which attracted the attention of onlookers witnessing the abduction.

Despite the alarming situation reported by witnesses, police response was hampered by confusion over jurisdiction and delays, which ultimately affected the investigation. The siblings’ whereabouts remained unknown for some time, creating widespread distress among the public and the victims’ families.

The investigation eventually led to the apprehension of the perpetrators through forensic evidence, including a crucial fingerprint found in a hospital where one of the accused sought medical attention for injuries sustained during the crime. Following their arrest on September 8, 1978, both Ranga and Billa were tried, convicted, and executed in 1982.

Supportive Cast and Production Details

Raakh also features a notable supporting cast, including Ali Fazal, Sonali Bendre, Rakesh Bedi, and Dibyendu Bhattacharya, among others, enhancing the narrative depth of the series. The combination of talented actors is set to bring the harrowing true story to life on screen.

Prosit Roy directs and executive produces this series, with Anusha Nandakumar and Sandeep Saket serving as writers and co-directors. The show has been produced by Endemol Shine India in collaboration with BhaDiPa, indicating a strong production team behind the project. Raakh is scheduled to premiere on June 12, 2026, marking a significant addition to the crime thriller genre based on real events.
