The publication of an illustration depicting DK Shivakumar as Lord Shiva in a Bengaluru-based Kannada newspaper has stirred significant controversy. This artwork was featured prominently in the lead story of Vishwavani on the day of Shivakumar’s oath-taking ceremony as Karnataka’s Chief Minister, scheduled for Wednesday. Critics have swiftly labelled the portrayal as blasphemous, accusing the outlet of inappropriately intertwining political narratives with religious imagery.
The illustration showed Shivakumar adorned with traditional elements associated with the deity, including matted hair, tiger-skin attire, a trident, and a damru. This representation has sparked outrage across various social media platforms, where users have expressed strong disapproval of what they see as a troubling mix of politics and faith.
Many individuals took to X to share their sentiments, with one commenter questioning why people in Karnataka appear to accept such portrayals without scrutiny. Legal advocate Girish Bharadwaj also voiced his concerns, stating that the depiction undermines the sanctity of Hindu deities and should never be used to glorify political figures.
