Congress Member of Parliament Karti Chidambaram has expressed his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent announcement regarding the establishment of fast-track courts to address paper leak cases. He referred to this action as ineffective and described it as a reactive measure that does not adequately tackle the root causes of systemic leaks in examination papers. During an interview with ANI, Chidambaram remarked that the government has not clarified how it plans to prevent future occurrences of such leaks.

Chidambaram pointed out the existing vulnerabilities in the supply chain associated with examination papers and emphasised the need for the government to address these issues. He raised concerns about the substantial tuition and preparatory course industry, which reportedly benefits from these leaks, indicating that the integrity of the examination process is compromised by financial incentives.

Furthermore, Chidambaram alleged that there is a connection between paper setters and coaching centres that contributes to the integrity issues in examinations. He questioned the government’s commitment to restoring trust in the examination system, stating that the proposal for fast-track courts amounts to mere punishment without offering a solution to the prevailing problems.

Tiwari Critiques Administrative Changes Amidst Controversy

Following Karti Chidambaram’s statements, fellow Congress MP Pramod Tiwari also raised concerns about the recent removal of Higher Education Department Secretary Vineet Joshi. Tiwari questioned the logic behind the government’s decision to retain the political head while dismissing the administrative one in the wake of the NEET-UG paper leak. He indicated that the inconsistency in accountability raises doubts regarding the effectiveness of the current administration.

In addressing the situation, Tiwari queried why Minister Dharmendra Pradhan remains in his position while the Secretary was removed, suggesting that it reflects poorly on the government’s governance. He implied that Prime Minister Modi’s position may be influenced by a reluctance to act decisively due to political pressures or personal ego, highlighting the need for coherent accountability within the administration.

Tiwari’s comments spotlights the ongoing discontent within the opposition regarding how such crucial matters are being handled, advocating for a reevaluation of responsibility at higher levels of government.

Demands for Accountability Continue Amid Nationwide Protests

Meanwhile, RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha has voiced his criticism of Prime Minister Modi’s recent midnight video message, wherein stricter actions against paper leaks were promised. In his remarks to ANI, Jha expressed concern over the implications of legislative processes that are perceived to overlook the aspirations of the youth affected by these systemic issues.

Jha’s comments reflect the sentiments of many youth and their families, who are demanding accountability and reform in the examination system. He questioned the meaningfulness of parliamentary discussions if they fail to address the real concerns of the public, indicating a broader sense of urgency for reform.

Amidst ongoing demonstrations, the Union Cabinet approved amendments to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. This decision is likely to be discussed in Parliament on July 27. Protests, originally launched on June 6, have intensified, culminating in the “Sansad Chalo” march on July 20, where protesters have been calling for stronger measures to ensure examination integrity.

On the same day, representatives from the Cockroach Janata Party met with Union Ministers to discuss their demands related to the NEET examination paper leak. Following their meeting, they announced that the government has requested additional time to consider the demand for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, reflecting the ongoing push for accountability from various political factions.
