Cleanup in Mumbai’s Garib Nagar Post Demolition Amid Ongoing Tension

The CSR Journal Magazine

The situation in Garib Nagar, located in Mumbai’s Bandra East, has shifted from demolition activities to cleanup efforts, although tension remains palpable. The area saw a significant police presence on Friday afternoon due to fears of renewed clashes as residents returned from a religious gathering. The intensification of security measures follows a volatile incident on Wednesday that resulted in violent confrontations, triggered by the demolition of a religious structure.

Authorities reported that the demolition led to stone pelting by local residents in protest, which prompted a police lathicharge. Following these clashes, the Mumbai Police arrested 19 individuals, including one minor, and are actively searching for an additional 10-15 suspects believed to have fled the area after the riots.

Investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage and social media recordings to identify those involved. The police have indicated that the stone pelting may not have been entirely spontaneous and are looking into possible conspiracy elements behind the actions of the demonstrators.

Court Proceedings and Legal Developments

On Thursday, fifteen of the arrested individuals were presented before a court, where the prosecution contended that the violent actions were premeditated. They claimed that stones and paving blocks had been stockpiled in advance of the anti-encroachment operation to mount an attack on the police. The police sought seven days of custody for further investigation, arguing that it was necessary to identify alleged masterminds behind the unrest.

Defence attorneys, on the other hand, argued that the violence erupted unscripted following the demolition of the mosque-like structure, which they claimed was executed without prior notice. They asserted that this action compromised the religious sentiments of the local community, leading to the subsequent unrest.

The Bandra Magistrate Court remanded the accused to police custody until May 26; the minor was sent to a juvenile home. On Friday, three additional accused were also produced in court related to the stone pelting incidents during the demolition efforts.

Demolition and Cleanup Efforts Continue

Western Railway has been conducting demolition activities in the area for the past four days, and these efforts appear to be nearing completion. Most illegal structures near the railway tracks have already been cleared, with only about 100 structures protected under High Court directives remaining. The manual dismantling of these unauthorised upper floors is scheduled to be completed by Saturday.

Railway officials reported that approximately 80 metric tonnes of debris are being removed daily and temporarily stored at a nearby site, with final disposal expected to take an additional week. Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek stated that the railway’s actions aim to improve access to Bandra Terminus and local railway stations, including routes to the Bandra Kurla Complex.

Officials anticipate that these improvements will enhance commuter experience by providing better connectivity and alleviating congestion around these critical transport hubs. As the cleanup progresses, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to maintain order in the aftermath of the recent disturbances.
