India’s Chairmanship and Global Context

India assumed the BRICS Chairmanship on January 1, 2023, taking over from Brazil. This marks the fourth occasion India has led the influential group, following prior presidencies in 2012, 2016, and 2021. The role underscores India’s growing influence within the bloc and its commitment to fostering cooperative relationships with fellow emerging economies.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the current challenges facing the global system, noting issues such as armed conflicts, climate change, and the residual impacts of the pandemic.
