China Backs India’s BRICS Presidency, Signals Support For Greater Cooperation

The CSR Journal Magazine

China has expressed full support for India’s leadership of BRICS in 2026, with Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong saying Beijing is ready to work closely with New Delhi to advance cooperation within the grouping and promote a more multipolar global order.

In a post on X, Xu noted that India is holding the BRICS presidency this year, while China will assume the chairmanship in 2027. He said both countries should work together to strengthen the role of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in addressing global challenges and promoting sustainable development.

The ambassador stated that China fully supports India in its responsibilities as BRICS chair and is prepared to collaborate in steering the high-quality development of both multilateral platforms.

India Hosts BRICS Foreign Policy Dialogue

The remarks came as India hosted the 11th BRICS Foreign Policy Dialogue in New Delhi on Friday, bringing together senior policy planners from BRICS member countries for discussions on the evolving global landscape.

According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the day-long dialogue focused on future forecasting, resilience-building and opportunities for cooperation among BRICS nations amid changing geopolitical and economic realities.

Officials engaged in thematic discussions covering innovation, sustainability, institutional resilience and cooperation in addressing shared global challenges. The dialogue also examined how BRICS countries can strengthen collaboration while adapting to emerging international trends.

The Indian delegation was led by Aparna Ray.

Focus On BRICS@20 And Global Governance Reforms

A key area of discussion was the future direction of the bloc as it approaches two decades of existence under the theme of “BRICS@20”. Delegates deliberated on ways to harness emerging technologies to improve service delivery and accelerate economic development across member nations.

Other topics included climate action, energy transition, economic resilience and reforms of global governance institutions. Participants also explored mechanisms to ensure that multilateral cooperation delivers tangible benefits for citizens across BRICS countries.

The discussions reflected growing efforts within the grouping to expand cooperation beyond trade and finance into areas such as technology, sustainability and governance reform.

Delegates Praise India’s Hospitality

As part of their visit, BRICS delegates travelled to Oswali near Ramachandi in Odisha’s Puri district, where they witnessed a safety demonstration and interacted with local communities.

Several participants praised the experience, highlighting India’s cultural heritage and hospitality. One delegate described the training demonstration as impressive and expressed admiration for the architectural precision of the historic temples in the region.

Another delegate said the visit offered valuable learning opportunities and described the experience as both exciting and enriching. She also commended India’s cuisine, artwork and welcoming atmosphere.

The positive remarks from delegates came alongside growing diplomatic engagement within BRICS, as India prepares to lead the grouping through a period marked by discussions on economic resilience, technological transformation and reforms of the international order.

China’s endorsement of India’s presidency is expected to lend additional momentum to efforts aimed at strengthening cooperation among BRICS members as the bloc seeks a greater role in shaping global governance and development priorities.
