Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna Begins 7-Day Visit to India to Boost Bilateral Ties

Chilean Foreign Affairs Minister Francisco Perez Mackenna has arrived in India to commence a seven-day official visit aimed at enhancing bilateral relations. His visit, which runs from May 9 to May 15, marks the first official engagement of its kind between Chile and India in recent years.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India expressed a warm welcome on the social media platform X, highlighting the significance of Mackenna’s visit in further consolidating the partnership between the two countries. The statement emphasised the potential for unlocking new avenues of cooperation during this diplomatic engagement.

Meetings and Events Scheduled

Throughout his stay in India, Minister Mackenna is scheduled to partake in various high-level meetings and events. In the capital city, he will engage in business discussions organised by prominent industry bodies, including the Forum of Indian Food Importers, ASSOCHAM, and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). One of the highlights of his visit will be attendance at the CII Annual Business Summit 2026, which aims to foster investment opportunities.

Mackenna is expected to hold detailed discussions with significant Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. The agenda for these conversations will encompass enhancing trade, investment, and technological collaboration between the two nations. Through these dialogues, both sides hope to strengthen economic ties and identify mutual interests.

In addition to engagements in New Delhi, Minister Mackenna is slated to travel to Bengaluru. There, he will meet with Karnataka Minister of Electronics, Information Technology, and Biotechnology, Priyank M Kharge. This meeting aims to explore collaborative opportunities within the innovative technology sector.

Historical Relations and Multilateral Collaboration

India and Chile have historically maintained strong diplomatic relations characterised by mutual respect and shared perspectives on various global issues. The two nations collaborate closely within multilateral forums, demonstrating a united front on significant matters, such as climate change and renewable energy initiatives.

Furthermore, both countries share common views on the expansion and reform of the United Nations Security Council, highlighting their commitment to working together on international platforms. Chile has emerged as India’s fifth-largest trading partner in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region, signifying the economic importance placed on their bilateral relations.

The ongoing engagement between India and Chile underscores not only a commitment to strengthen diplomatic ties but also a collective effort to address global challenges collaboratively.
