Centre Notifies Bhogapuram Airport As Authorised Immigration Check Post

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Central government has notified Bhogapuram Airport in Andhra Pradesh as an authorised immigration check post, clearing a key regulatory requirement for the upcoming airport to handle international passengers.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) amended its September 1, 2025 notification listing authorised immigration check posts across India and added Bhogapuram Airport under the airports category. The development comes days after the greenfield airport received its aerodrome licence, moving it closer to the commencement of commercial flight operations.

Bhogapuram Airport Gets Immigration Check Post Status

The MHA issued the amendment under powers conferred by Section 4(1) of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.

According to the notification issued last week, Bhogapuram Airport has been inserted as serial number 39 under Category I (Airports) in the list of authorised immigration check posts.

The designation formally allows immigration authorities to process passengers arriving from and departing for international destinations once overseas flight operations begin.

Immigration officers will be able to conduct passport verification, visa checks and other procedures prescribed under India’s immigration laws.

Immigration Clearance Key For International Flight Operations

Under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, the Central government can designate airports, seaports, land border crossings and other locations as authorised immigration check posts.

These checkpoints regulate the entry into and departure from India of foreign nationals as well as Indian citizens travelling internationally.

Designation as an authorised immigration check post is a key statutory requirement before an airport can handle scheduled international passenger services.

The Centre’s notification completes an important regulatory step required for Bhogapuram Airport to begin international operations in the future.

Bhogapuram Airport Positioned As Major Aviation Hub

Bhogapuram Airport is being developed near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh to improve air connectivity and meet growing domestic and international passenger demand.

The greenfield airport is being positioned as a major aviation hub for north coastal Andhra Pradesh and is expected to complement the existing airport in Visakhapatnam.

Infrastructure development at the airport is progressing as preparations continue for the commencement of commercial flight operations.

The airport has been designed to handle nearly 40 million passengers annually.

Its 78,000-square-metre terminal building has been designed in the shape of a flying fish, with interiors and exteriors intended to reflect the culture and heritage of North Andhra.

Bhogapuram Airport Received Aerodrome Licence Last Week

The latest notification comes days after the Ministry of Civil Aviation issued an aerodrome licence to the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Greenfield Airport at Bhogapuram.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu handed over the licence documents to representatives of GMR Airports in New Delhi on July 10.

Naidu said the grant of the aerodrome licence signified that Bhogapuram Airport was ready for commercial flight operations.

With the aerodrome licence and authorised immigration check post status secured, the airport has completed major regulatory steps towards beginning domestic and future international flight operations.
