CBI Takes Custody of Samarth Singh in Twisha Sharma Death Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken Samarth Singh, husband of Twisha Sharma, into custody in relation to her suspicious death. This development followed a court ruling in Bhopal that allowed the CBI to detain Singh earlier in the day. Singh, a practising lawyer, was originally apprehended by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Madhya Pradesh Police in Jabalpur and subsequently transferred to Bhopal. A magistrate court granted a seven-day police remand until May 29, according to legal representatives.

According to Advocate Ankur Pandey, who spoke to news agency PTI, the SIT no longer needed Singh’s custody since the CBI had assumed control of the case. Consequently, he was presented in court, where the CBI requested his remand for further investigation. The court consented to this plea, allowing Singh to remain in CBI custody for the duration of the inquiry.

Background of the Twisha Sharma Case

The CBI initiated its probe into the case on May 22, following the mysterious circumstances surrounding Twisha Sharma’s death. The former model and actor was discovered hanging in her marital home in Bhopal on May 12. Upon taking over the investigation from local authorities, the CBI re-registered a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Madhya Pradesh Police, naming Samarth Singh and his mother, Giribala Singh, as accused parties.

The CBI has invoked several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to dowry deaths and cruelty against women. These sections include 80(2), which pertains to the punishment for dowry death, 85, which relates to a husband or his relatives subjecting a woman to cruelty, and 3(5), which deals with common intention. The allegations were initially levelled by the state police shortly after Twisha’s demise.

Twisha’s family has reportedly claimed that she faced harassment from her in-laws, who expressed dissatisfaction with the dowry provided during her marriage in December 2025. They have accused Samarth and his family of subjecting Twisha to mental torment and physical abuse, ultimately leading her to take her own life. Conversely, Giribala Singh has raised questions about the mental health and medical treatment of Twisha before her death.

Public Reaction and Investigative Developments

The case has sparked significant national outcry, prompting Twisha’s parents to raise concerns regarding potential procedural lapses by local authorities in Bhopal. Public attention has heightened due to the serious nature of the allegations, leading to demands for thorough investigations. Days after Twisha’s death, authorities arrested Samarth in Jabalpur on May 22 after he had been evading capture for ten days.

A team of medical professionals from AIIMS-Delhi conducted a second postmortem examination of Twisha in Bhopal on Sunday, following directives issued by the Madhya Pradesh High Court. This action was in response to Twisha’s parents, who had expressed serious concerns about the initial investigations conducted by local authorities. The outcome of the second postmortem is awaited as the investigation continues.

As the CBI’s investigation progresses, it remains under scrutiny from both the public and media to ensure that justice is served in the case of Twisha Sharma. The implications of this case are significant as they highlight ongoing issues relating to domestic abuse and women’s rights in India.
