Case Filed Against Shiv Sena Corporator and Associates for Assaulting Doctors in Thane Hospital

The CSR Journal Magazine

A Shiv Sena corporator, Ramesh Sukrya Mhatre, and five others have been accused of assaulting two doctors and additional medical staff at a civic hospital in Thane, Maharashtra. This incident, which took place on the evening of July 6, was reportedly prompted when the family of a newborn was advised to transfer the baby to another facility due to a lack of space in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The incident has since become a matter of public concern after a video of the assault circulated on social media.

The attack on the doctors, identified as Srishti Bawiskar and Vaibhav Salunkhe, drew immediate condemnation from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and sparked significant public outrage. Following the incident, a case was formally registered against Mhatre and his associates late on July 7, responding to mounting pressure from the medical community and the public.

Witnesses reported that the confrontation escalated after the family of the newborn reached out to Mhatre, who then arrived at the hospital to confront the medical professionals. During the altercation, Dr Salunkhe sustained injuries as a result of the assault.

Reactions from Medical and Political Communities

The IMA’s local branches in Kalyan and Dombivli expressed their outrage over the attack, threatening to cease operations in hospitals and private clinics if immediate action against Mhatre was not taken. Their demands included the swift arrest of the corporator and his supporters, emphasising the need for safety and respect for healthcare workers in the region.

In the wake of the assault, hospital employees organised a work stoppage as a form of protest against the incident. This demonstrates the broader implications of the attack on the working environment in healthcare facilities and the concern for safety among medical staff. As public dissatisfaction grew, the IMA sought meetings with the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) officials, reinforcing their position on the necessity of protective measures for healthcare professionals.

Political commentary surrounding the incident intensified as well. Aaditya Thackeray, a legislator from Shiv Sena (UBT), openly questioned the response of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis regarding the alliance with Shiv Sena and its implications for law and order. Thackeray’s remarks highlighted a growing unease regarding the dynamics between healthcare safety and political accountability.

Investigation Status and Future Actions

Authorities have started an investigation into the matter, with the police stating that the case against Mhatre and his accomplices includes various charges, including assault on public servants, criminal intimidation, and unlawful assembly. However, there have been no arrests reported as of now. Assistant Commissioner of Police Suhas Nemade assured the public that a thorough investigation would take place, emphasising that those responsible will face appropriate legal repercussions.

As this situation continues to unfold, the incident reflects both the challenges faced by healthcare professionals in India and the political tensions that can arise from such acts of violence. The fallout from the attack has prompted not only legal actions but also a reevaluation of the relationship between political figures and public safety in healthcare settings.

The actions taken in the coming days by both law enforcement and the political leadership will be critical in determining how similar incidents are addressed in the future. As public and medical institutions remain vigilant, the response to this event will likely set a precedent for the protection of healthcare workers across Maharashtra and beyond.
