Dombivli Doctor Assault Case: Shiv Sena Corporator Ramesh Mhatre Sent to Police Custody Until July 13

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a recent decision, a Kalyan court has ordered that Shiv Sena Corporator Ramesh Mhatre be held in police custody until July 13. The ruling follows Mhatre’s involvement in the assault case targeting medical personnel at the Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli. After his release from Thane Civil Hospital, where he was deemed medically stable, he was presented before the Kalyan Sessions Court earlier today.

Police Actions and Legal Representation

Mhatre was taken into custody on July 10 under Sections 132 and 121(1) of the Indian Penal Code, following an incident that reportedly occurred on July 6. His lawyer, MK Qazi, argued against the police’s request for five days of custody, citing Mhatre’s advanced age and health conditions. The court, while granting the police custody, instructed them to ensure that Mhatre receives necessary medical treatment every six hours, should he require it.

The court previously dismissed Mhatre’s request to appear through video conferencing, mandating his physical presence for the ongoing proceedings. This decision underscores the seriousness with which the court is treating the charges against him.

Four other individuals have also been arrested in connection with the incident. The police are actively investigating these additional suspects as the case unfolds, indicating a wider network of involvement in the alleged assault on healthcare workers.

Allegations and Mhatre’s Defence

The case revolves around an alleged attack on doctors and nurses at the Shastri Nagar Hospital that has generated significant backlash from the medical community. Mhatre has publicly denied the allegations, claiming that he did not physically harm any medical staff during his visit to the hospital. He suggested that the interpretation of the incident as an assault may have arisen due to the way CCTV footage captured the events.

In his statements, Mhatre expressed regret regarding the altercation, asserting that his actions were misunderstood. He mentioned that he had merely tapped a female doctor’s hand in an effort to communicate effectively as she was preoccupied on her phone during the conversation. Mhatre described the doctor as someone he considers close, stating, “I address her informally because she is like a daughter to me.”

Moreover, Mhatre attributed the incident to systemic issues within the hospital itself, implying that deficiencies in hospital management might have contributed to the confrontation. He indicated that the matter should be addressed to prevent future occurrences and suggested that others who had called him to the hospital could provide further insights regarding the situation.

Reactions from the Medical Community

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from various medical associations, raising concerns about the safety and treatment of healthcare professionals in India. These ongoing discussions highlight the risks faced by medical personnel in their line of work and the necessity for protective measures within healthcare settings.

The case continues to develop as authorities gather more information. The next court date will be significant in determining the direction of the proceedings, as communities advocate for accountability and a commitment to enhancing the safety of medical staff.

As this situation progresses, attention will remain on the implications it may have for both the individuals involved and the broader healthcare system in Dombivli and beyond.
