Calcutta High Court Permits Mamata Banerjee’s Rally on July 8 Regarding Baruipur Rape-Murder Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Calcutta High Court has approved a rally organised by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on July 8, in response to the tragic Baruipur rape and murder case. Kalyan Banerjee, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament, confirmed the court’s decision to reporters. He stated that the rally is expected to occur between 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm, starting from Ballygunge Phari and concluding at the Syama Prasad Mukherjee Road crossing.

Kalyan Banerjee remarked on the court’s stance, highlighting that the proceedings are primarily organised by the student and youth wings of the TMC. He further noted that the state government has imposed restrictions on protests occurring from Monday to Friday, barring Saturdays and Sundays, which he considers a violation of constitutional rights. Banerjee called for policy re-evaluation by the state to allow for uninterrupted democratic expression.

Allegations Against State Police

During the announcement of the rally, Kalyan Banerjee accused the West Bengal Police of engaging in unlawful activities by arresting several TMC party members in the past two months. He claimed that approximately 10,000 party workers had been detained, asserting that the police had resorted to practices he described as “criminal” to prevent TMC members from participating in protests. Banerjee insisted that such actions are detrimental to democracy and stifle the voices of the people.

These comments come amid increasing tensions surrounding the handling of the Baruipur case, where a 12-year-old girl was reported missing and later discovered deceased in a local pond. The nature of the incident has elicited widespread outrage, prompting demands for swift justice, including calls for capital punishment from officials, including Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

Mamata Banerjee has also actively participated in demonstration efforts, leading a candlelight vigil on July 3, to express solidarity with the victim’s family and to condemn the incident of alleged rape and murder. In her attempts to engage with the community during this challenging time, she has faced accusations from TMC leaders that the state police have unlawfully restricted her movements.

Public Response and Ongoing Protests

The gruesome nature of the Baruipur case has mobilised local citizens, leading to widespread protests across the region. Many residents have expressed their anger and sorrow regarding the tragic loss of the young girl, demanding justice and accountability for those responsible. Observers note that the incident has highlighted significant issues surrounding safety and law enforcement in the area.

As the rally approaches, both supporters and critics of the TMC are closely monitoring developments. The decision by the High Court has further invigorated support for the rally among party members, who see it as a critical opportunity to voice their concerns about public safety and governmental accountability. Despite the challenges presented by police actions, the TMC remains determined to advocate for the rights of the citizens.

Amid this charged political environment, the coming days are expected to see heightened activity from both the TMC and law enforcement, as the party pushes forth with its rally and ongoing responses to the tragic events. The outcome of these demonstrations will likely influence future political dynamics in West Bengal.
