The Brazil national football team is reportedly planning its return to India, marking the first such visit in several years. Kolkata has emerged as a strong contender to host an international friendly match during the upcoming October FIFA window. According to ESPN Brasil, negotiations led by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) are at an advanced stage with the aim of finalising a third friendly match in India, complementing two scheduled games against Australia on September 25 in Townsville and September 29 in Brisbane.

The specific opponent for the October fixture has yet to be confirmed. However, the dialogue surrounding this match relates to the positive reception Brazil enjoyed from Kolkata’s football fans during the recent FIFA World Cup held in the United States.

Initial discussions between the CBF and local event organisers had taken place during the World Cup, further solidifying Kolkata as a favourable venue. The local enthusiasm for Brazilian football has reportedly prompted the CBF to consider this engagement.

Kolkata is often recognised as a key hub for football in India, a reputation cemented during this year’s FIFA World Cup. During the tournament, large sections of the city showcased their support for the Brazilian team, adorned in yellow and green. A local resident, Sourav Ghosal, shared sentiments during the World Cup, stating that Kolkata is regarded as the mecca of football, illustrating the city’s long-standing connection to the sport. The worldwide interest generated by the World Cup served to amplify this zeal among its residents.

The CBF’s interest in scheduling a match in Kolkata highlights the city’s historical engagement with football, particularly with international teams like Brazil and Argentina.
