The Bombay High Court has mandated that the Union government make a decision by May 4 regarding the posthumous award of the Padma Vibhushan to Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav, who is recognised as India’s first individual Olympic medallist. The directive was issued by Justices Madhav Jamdar and Pravin Patil at the Kolhapur bench of the court on April 15, emphasising that Jadhav’s significance in Indian sporting history is undisputed.

This order follows a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the ‘Kusteeveer Khashaba Jadhav Foundation’, which was established by Jadhav’s son, Ranjeet Jadhav. The foundation sought intervention from the Ministry of Home Affairs, specifically the Padma Awards Cell, to reconsider their request for the prestigious award for Jadhav, who had a notable wrestling career.

Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav passed away in 1984, leaving behind a legacy as a champion wrestler. He won a bronze medal at the Helsinki Olympic Games in 1952, achieving a milestone that marked a pivotal moment in Indian sports history.
