Bombay High Court Orders Centre to Decide on KD Jadhav’s Padma Vibhushan

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Bombay High Court has mandated that the Union government make a decision by May 4 regarding the posthumous award of the Padma Vibhushan to Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav, who is recognised as India’s first individual Olympic medallist. The directive was issued by Justices Madhav Jamdar and Pravin Patil at the Kolhapur bench of the court on April 15, emphasising that Jadhav’s significance in Indian sporting history is undisputed.

This order follows a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the ‘Kusteeveer Khashaba Jadhav Foundation’, which was established by Jadhav’s son, Ranjeet Jadhav. The foundation sought intervention from the Ministry of Home Affairs, specifically the Padma Awards Cell, to reconsider their request for the prestigious award for Jadhav, who had a notable wrestling career.

Significance of Khashaba Jadhav’s Achievement

Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav passed away in 1984, leaving behind a legacy as a champion wrestler. He won a bronze medal at the Helsinki Olympic Games in 1952, achieving a milestone that marked a pivotal moment in Indian sports history. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he was posthumously awarded the Arjuna Award in 2001, although his family has sought further recognition and honour for his achievements.

Despite several representations to the government over the years aimed at securing Jadhav’s recognition through the Padma Vibhushan, the family had not received any substantial response. This lack of acknowledgment prompted the foundation to approach the High Court, highlighting the need for a decision on their previous requests.

The court directed the Union of India to reach a decision promptly, ensuring that timely action is taken regarding the award application. The High Court also stated that the state government must adhere to any necessary procedures without delay, underscoring the importance of expedience in this matter.

Next Steps Following Court Directive

The Bombay High Court has scheduled a follow-up hearing on this issue for May 5, indicating that the matter will continue to receive judicial scrutiny after the government’s response is submitted. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that Khashaba Jadhav’s contributions to Indian sports are formally recognised, reflecting the sentiments of his family and supporters.

Jadhav’s legacy as a pioneering athlete continues to inspire many in India. His achievements are seen as a source of national pride, and the ongoing efforts to posthumously honour him with the Padma Vibhushan have garnered attention from various quarters of society.

As the deadline for the Union government’s decision approaches, stakeholders are monitoring the situation closely. The outcome may have significant implications not only for Jadhav’s family but also for the broader sporting community in India, illuminating the ongoing dialogue around recognition for athletes who have made exceptional contributions to their fields.
