BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari Praises High Voter Turnout in First Phase of West Bengal Polls

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent elections in West Bengal saw a noteworthy voter turnout, prompting Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, to commend the process as largely peaceful. Adhikari, who is a BJP candidate from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur assembly constituencies, acknowledged the efforts of the Election Commission and the security forces in facilitating a smooth polling day. He remarked, “The Election Commission was active, the paramilitary forces were active, and there was awareness among the people.”

According to Adhikari, the turnout in the region was impressive, with reports indicating a participation rate of 90 per cent from voters in Nandigram. The elections in West Bengal coincided with another phase of voting in Tamil Nadu, which recorded a turnout of 84.69 per cent, showcasing robust electoral engagement across the two states.

Allegations of Violence During Polling

Despite the overall peaceful atmosphere, the polling process was marred by allegations of violence in certain areas of West Bengal. An incident in Kumarganj raised concerns when a video emerged showing BJP candidate Subhendu Sarkar reportedly being pursued through fields and allegedly assaulted by a group. The BJP claimed that the attack was orchestrated by supporters of the Trinamool Congress as Sarkar attempted to reach a polling booth amidst reports of disturbances in the locality.

The distressing footage allegedly depicted Sarkar fleeing alongside a police official before he was apprehended by a crowd. Adhikari condemned the violence, describing it as a significant lapse in civility. He stated, “This is very anti-social. He is a goon from a specific community, acting under the protection of Mamata Banerjee and the police.”

Adhikari expressed strong disapproval of the manner in which Sarkar was treated during the incident, labelling it an attack on a gentleman in plain view of the camera.

Factors Influencing Voter Turnout

Delving into the elements that shaped voter turnout, Adhikari emphasised the role of public awareness and pressing governance issues in influencing electoral behaviour this time around. He noted that the populace has become significantly more informed about the issues at hand, such as industry, employment opportunities, and women’s safety. Additionally, he pointed to infiltration as a pressing concern for voters.

Adhikari suggested that the BJP’s manifesto resonated with the electorate, as he asserted, “The public has faith in the manifesto released by the BJP.” He highlighted how key political and social factors had stirred public sentiment, particularly among voters identifying with the Sanatana community.

Furthermore, he asserted that the electorate had come to realise that this might be their last chance to make an impactful vote, underscoring the significance of the ongoing elections. Citing women’s safety and claims of appeasement politics, he claimed these elements have greatly influenced voter preferences during this phase.

Upcoming Voting Schedule and Vote Counting

Looking ahead, the remaining 142 constituencies in West Bengal are scheduled to hold elections on May 29. This phase will be pivotal as it determines the political landscape of the state. The counting of votes for the elections held across all constituencies will take place on May 4, marking a crucial date in the electoral calendar. With voter turnout being a key focus, the outcome of this election is keenly anticipated by both political parties and observers alike.
