The CSR Journal Magazine

The victory of Jahar Chakraborti from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Dharmanagar Assembly bypoll has strengthened the party’s presence in the Tripura Assembly. Chakraborti triumphed with a margin of 18,920 votes over his closest competitor, Amitabha Datta of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)).

Chakraborti garnered a total of 24,291 votes, while Datta received 6,001 votes. In addition, Chayan Bhattacharya from the Congress party recorded 5,936 votes in the electoral contest. This bypoll was called following the passing of Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen in December 2025.

The turnout for this bypoll was notably high at 79.84 per cent, reflecting significant public engagement in the electoral process. The results have far-reaching implications for the political landscape in Tripura.

BJP’s Strength in the Tripura Assembly Increases

With the latest victory, the BJP now holds 33 seats in the 60-member Tripura Assembly, affirming its dominant position. The party’s coalition partners include the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) with 13 MLAs and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura, which has one member in the Assembly.

This robust assembly strength is crucial for the BJP as it seeks to maintain its governance and implement policies effectively in the state. The party’s coalition appears stable, and the recent electoral success emphasizes the support it enjoys among voters in Dharmanagar.

Political analysts suggest that these outcomes could influence future elections in the region, as the BJP aims to expand its reach further into neighbouring constituencies.

Chief Minister Expresses Gratitude to Voters

Following the successful election, Chief Minister Manik Saha extended his appreciation to the residents of Dharmanagar for their support. In a message shared on Facebook, Saha expressed his heartfelt thanks for the overwhelming mandate given to Chakraborti.

Saha remarked on the responsibility that comes with such significant support, stating that the government is committed to the development, peace, and progress of Dharmanagar. He emphasised the need for collective effort in driving development forward, reinforcing the BJP’s agenda in the region.

Overall, the results of this bypoll are considered an affirming moment for the BJP in Tripura, providing a renewed mandate as they continue to address various local issues and foster progress in the Assembly.
