BJP Ministers Adopt Austerity Measures Following PM Modi’s Call

The CSR Journal Magazine

The call for austerity has been echoed by various ministers within the BJP following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal for restraint amid economic pressures related to the ongoing Iran conflict. The Prime Minister urged citizens to adopt Covid-era practices of moderation, pushing for lifestyle changes that align with the realities posed by fluctuating oil prices and limited foreign exchange reserves.

This push comes after a notable delay, occurring only after the elections in four states concluded on May 11. As many nations, such as China and Pakistan, have already implemented fuel rationing and work-from-home measures, India had remained steadfast until now. The Prime Minister’s appeal sought a collective sacrifice that included a shift towards public transport and curbed luxury spending.

The Prime Minister emphasised the need to decrease diesel and petrol usage, delay gold purchases, and reduce dietary reliance on imported oils. Furthermore, he addressed the need for minimising international travel, particularly for leisure purposes, to bolster the nation’s economic stability.

Implementation of Austerity Measures

In response to Modi’s appeal, numerous BJP-ruled states have swiftly adopted austerity protocols. Notably, both the Prime Minister and multiple Chief Ministers have significantly reduced their official convoy sizes. Reports indicate that Prime Minister Modi himself has ordered a 50 per cent curtailment in the number of vehicles accompanying him, encouraging the integration of electric vehicles into state operations.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also been seen arriving with a reduced convoy, reportedly comprising only five cars, a sharp decrease from the usual count of ten to eleven. Chief Ministers across various states, including Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, have established similar guidelines aimed at minimising unnecessary expenditures and optimising resource use within government functions.

For instance, the government of Maharashtra has mandated that ministers avoid non-essential flights, favouring virtual meetings and communications as an alternative. Furthermore, multiple ministers, including Kapil Mishra and Ramdas Athawale, have been seen utilising public transport for their daily commutes, illustrating a grassroots commitment to the newly adopted measures.

State-Specific Austerity Actions

In Maharashtra, the government led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has implemented stringent regulations regarding government aircraft, permitting usage only under urgent circumstances, with prior approval from the Chief Minister. Additionally, cultural events requiring travel, such as a minister’s presence at the Cannes Film Festival, have been called off, demonstrating compliance with the austerity message.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has also urged all officials and ministers to utilise a contracted number of vehicles, emphasising carpooling and public transport as priorities. Gupta’s directives aim not only to reduce expenses but also to encourage citizens to adopt similar habits within the metropolitan region.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s directive for a 50 per cent reduction in ministerial convoy sizes underscores the comprehensive approach being taken. Adityanath has also advocated for reduced fuel consumption and the avoidance of unnecessary luxury purchases among residents.

In Gujarat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel exemplified these measures with a minimal three-vehicle convoy during a recent trip. The state has implemented additional measures including the Governor’s decision to forgo helicopter transport in favour of trains and buses, indicative of a broader shift towards sustainable travel practices within the state’s leadership.
