Bhupesh Baghel Labels Assam Assembly Elections as a Contest of “Real vs Fake Congress”

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh Baghel, has characterized the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections as a battle between the “real Congress” and the “fake Congress.” In a statement made to reporters, Baghel asserted that the genuine Congress, represented by Gaurav Gogoi, stands in opposition to what he termed the fake Congress, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. This declaration comes as the Congress party ramps up efforts to challenge the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Assam.

Strategic Appointments Ahead of Elections

As part of its preparation for the elections, the Congress party has announced the appointment of a team of All India Congress Committee (AICC) observers for the polls in Assam. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has authorized the immediate appointment of Ashok Singh, Vinod Verma, Anirudh Singh, Virendra Rathore, Yogesh Dixit, and Aditya Sharma. These appointments aim to bolster organizational coordination in the lead-up to this critical electoral event.

Condemnation of Media Hostility

In related developments, Gaurav Gogoi condemned the recent burning of copies of the Assamese newspaper Asomiya Pratidin in Sivasagar, attributing responsibility for the incident to Chief Minister Sarma. Gogoi alleged that the ruling BJP government has fostered an atmosphere of hostility towards the media, accusing party leaders and activists of targeting journalists. He described the incident as a “planned and systemic attack,” criticizing the Chief Minister for failing to take a serious approach or outline specific actions in response to the event.

Claims of Corruption Within the BJP

Furthermore, Gogoi claimed that the BJP has given undue prominence to individuals connected with illegal syndicates during ticket distribution, neglecting senior party leaders in the process. He referenced a recent opposition unity rally held in Sarbhog, expressing confidence that campaigning would gain momentum even with the Election Commission’s constraints on time.

Election Schedule and Counting Date

The Assam Assembly elections are set to take place in a single phase on April 9, covering a total of 126 assembly seats. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, adding further significance to the political contest in the region.
