Children With Early Smartphone Use May Experience Memory Issues and Diminished Academic Success: Study

The implications of early smartphone use on children have been highlighted by recent research indicating that early exposure may adversely affect memory and academic achievement. This study, conducted by researchers from Inserm and the National University of Singapore, reveals troubling correlations between screen time in early childhood and cognitive performance in later years.

In assessing the cognitive development of 502 children from the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) birth cohort, the study monitored the amount of screen time each child was exposed to at various ages. The findings showed a significant association between higher screen time during crucial developmental stages and reduced academic performance by age 9 and impaired memory skills around age 10.5.

The research published in the World Journal of Pediatrics highlights that the timing of screen exposure is crucial. It specifically analyses screen use at six different ages to better understand the lasting effects on cognitive development, rather than simply focusing on the total hours spent in front of screens.

Key Findings About Screen Time at Various Ages

Notably, the study determined that children who engaged in more screen time at the age of 1 were likely to face poorer academic outcomes later in life, alongside diminished working memory capabilities. Additionally, screen use noted in children around age 6 showed similar negative associations. This suggests that the infancy and early school years are particularly sensitive periods for screen exposure.

The researchers propose that increased screen time might restrict opportunities for essential activities that support learning and overall child development. These activities may include physical play, reading, and nurturing interactions with caregivers. As children engage less in these critical experiences, they may suffer in various developmental areas.

This research is not an isolated finding. In 2020, a study led by Sheri Madigan from the University of Calgary reviewed 42 studies involving nearly 19,000 children. It underscored that prolonged screen time was correlated with diminished language skills in children, highlighting the importance of both the nature of content consumed and parental involvement. Educational content and co-viewing with caregivers were linked to enhanced language skills.

Wider Implications of Excessive Screen Exposure

Expanding on these findings, a 2023 review conducted in France examined 15 studies concerning screen exposure’s relationship with attention issues in young children. The review revealed consistent associations between increased screen time and attention difficulties. Among the longitudinal studies, those that tracked children over time suggested that early screen use was often linked to future attention problems.

The conclusion drawn by these researchers indicates that excessive or premature screen exposure could impact various aspects of children’s development, ranging from cognitive functions to language competency and attention span. However, it is important to consider that the content viewed, duration of exposure, and level of parental engagement can significantly influence the outcome of screen use on child development.

As discussions surrounding children’s screen time continue, it becomes imperative for parents, educators, and policymakers to weigh these findings carefully in order to support healthy developmental practices amidst the growing prevalence of technology in children’s lives.
