The recent floods in Nepal, triggered by a glacier-related incident, have left many individuals from southern states in India missing or stranded. Rasuwa district and surrounding areas have been severely affected, prompting local authorities to report that nearly 300 Indians are among those unaccounted for. According to Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, the disaster has claimed the lives of 175 people, with information indicating that around 1,500 individuals, including over 800 foreigners, are missing across Nepal and Tibet.

Casualties and Missing Individuals by State

Tamil Nadu has emerged as the state with the highest number of those reported missing, with approximately 103 individuals who had travelled to Nepal for the Kailash Yatra. The group comprised participants from various districts, including Cuddalore, Thanjavur, and Chennai, among others. The Tamil Nadu School Education Minister, Raj Mohan, confirmed the involvement of multiple travel groups, including Super Yatra Kumbakonam. This particular group had 57 members, who found themselves stranded when flooding occurred during their journey in Rasuwa district.

In addition to Tamil Nadu’s figures, Kerala is reportedly facing a crisis, with around 53 individuals, including families with children, believed to be stuck in Nepal. NORKA Roots, the agency responsible for Keralite expatriates, noted that it has received multiple reports about missing individuals. However, due to network connectivity issues, direct communication with these individuals remains elusive, hindering rescue efforts.

Karnataka has also reported that five individuals from Bengaluru are missing following their visit to Nepal. Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara stated that a senior government official may be dispatched to Kathmandu to oversee search and rescue operations, showcasing the urgency of the situation. In Andhra Pradesh, seven locals have been identified as either missing or stranded, including four who have been found safe, yet still unable to return home.

Coordinated Rescue Efforts Across States

Efforts to locate missing individuals have involved various state authorities. Telangana has been receiving a high volume of calls, with about 70 to 80 inquiries regarding relatives believed to be trapped in Nepal. These reports are being forwarded to the Ministry of External Affairs for further action. The Indian Embassy in Nepal is actively working to trace the whereabouts of these individuals and ensure their safety.

In Andhra Pradesh, Minister Nara Lokesh is taking a lead role in coordinating rescue operations, aiming for the safe return of all missing residents. The three missing individuals from Andhra Pradesh have been identified, including Bala Subramanyam from Kuppam and two others connected to the Isha Foundation Group. This heightened coordination reflects the seriousness of the ongoing situation and the necessity for rapid action.

Authorities across the states are collecting and sharing information to enable timely assistance for those stranded in Nepal. Government interventions are being coordinated with local agencies and the Indian Embassy to facilitate efforts in tracing individuals, ensuring a thorough response to the disaster affecting many families across southern India.
