The CSR Journal Magazine

Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state has confiscated narcotics valued at over Rs 3,253 crore and apprehended 26,500 offenders since the year 2021. This statement was made during an address on July 9, 2023, highlighting the ongoing efforts of the Assam government in combating drug-related crimes.

Statistics of Arrests Over Recent Years

In detailing the progress made in the campaign against drugs, Chief Minister Sarma disclosed that in 2021, there were 4,175 arrests linked to narcotics activities. This figure saw a notable increase to 4,901 arrests in the year 2022, indicating a sustained escalation in law enforcement activities targeting drug offences. Sarma emphasised that these numbers are a reflection of a determined stance against illegal drugs.

The Chief Minister’s remarks came during a discussion on creating a Drugs-Free Assam within the state assembly, where he reiterated the commitment to continue the fight against drug trafficking. He praised the efforts of Assam Police and supportive agencies who have been instrumental in the operations aimed at protecting the state’s youth.

Sarma acknowledged the vital support received from the Central Government and neighbouring states in efforts to enhance the collective fight against drug abuse and trafficking. This collaboration is seen as crucial to dismantling drug networks that have detrimental effects on communities.

Next Steps in the Crackdown Against Drugs

The Chief Minister affirmed that the aggressive crackdown on narcotics will proceed with full force as the state continues to pursue its goal of eradicating drug trafficking. He encouraged continued vigilance and cooperation from all stakeholders, including law enforcement, citizens, and governmental bodies, to achieve a drug-free environment.

Additionally, Sarma’s commitment to this cause reflects broader concerns regarding the impact of drug abuse on local populations and the necessity for rehabilitation and prevention programmes to be part of the legislative agenda. He underscored the importance of creating awareness about the dangers of drugs as a preventative measure.

The command to tackle drug-related issues has placed Assam on a path devoted to dismantling the extended supply chains facilitating narcotics trafficking. This strategic approach underlines the significance of inter-agency collaboration as a method to curb illicit activities effectively.
