The CSR Journal Magazine

The Assam government has initiated a comprehensive drug disposal programme, during which narcotics and psychotropic substances valued at Rs 472.51 crore are being destroyed. This event took place in Nalbari district on July 12, where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the efforts to eliminate these harmful substances.

The destruction occurred at the 14th Assam Police Battalion in Daulasal. In a symbolic gesture, Chief Minister Sarma himself operated a road roller to crush the seized drugs, demonstrating the government’s commitment to tackling the narcotics crisis.

Details of Seized Drugs Destroyed

During the disposal programme, a significant quantity of various narcotics was reported to be destroyed. This included 39.068 kg of morphine, which is worth Rs 39.07 crore, and 58.88 kg of heroin valued at Rs 117.75 crore. Additional items in the destruction process included 37,796.34 kg of ganja, 229,449 bottles of cough syrup, and a multitude of tablets and capsules.

Among the notable substances were 1,870,922 Yaba tablets containing methamphetamine, valued at Rs 74.84 crore, and 79.77 kg of opium, worth Rs 3.98 crore. This comprehensive destruction highlights the extensive efforts made by the government in combating drug abuse and trafficking.

Chief Minister Sarma indicated that the disposal campaign is set to continue for 10 more days with the aid of a drug disposal machine provided by the Union government. He emphasised the importance of this initiative for public safety and drug rehabilitation efforts.

Strengthening Anti-Drug Measures

In his address, Chief Minister Sarma underscored the necessity for enhanced intelligence gathering and stronger inter-state cooperation to effectively combat drug trafficking. He noted that successful measures will require collaboration between various state governments.

Over the past five years, Assam has reported 3,300 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, resulting in the seizure of drugs valued at Rs 3,227 crore. Sarma acknowledged that these seizures represent merely 20 per cent of the total drug trafficking in the region, signalling an ongoing challenge.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister stated that Assam has increasingly become a transit point for narcotics trafficked from Myanmar through various North Eastern states into mainland India. He appealed for increased public support for the government’s initiatives against drug smugglers and traffickers.

Future Directions in Drug Enforcement

The government plans to intensify its anti-drug initiatives over the next five years. Sarma noted that recent cooperation from opposition parties is encouraging, as they now support stringent actions against drug-related crimes. He believes that effective coordination with neighbouring states will play a crucial role in dismantling drug trafficking networks.

As the situation evolves, Chief Minister Sarma remains optimistic about future reductions in drug consumption within Assam, citing ongoing efforts aimed at preventing narcotics from reaching the youth and protecting the community at large.

With a strong commitment to enhance state-level and inter-state cooperation, the Assam government is poised to make significant strides in its efforts against drug abuse and trafficking.
