The Arunachal Democratic Party (ADP) has officially merged with the Indian National Congress, with all its office-bearers and members joining the party during an induction ceremony held in Arunachal Pradesh. The merger marks a political realignment in the state, although it does not alter the Congress’s current strength in the Assembly.
ADP president Tami Pangu said the decision was guided by ideological conviction and confidence in the Congress’s commitment to democratic values, secularism, and constitutional principles. He described the move as more than a political shift, calling it an effort aimed at protecting democratic institutions and strengthening constitutional governance.
The Congress currently has one MLA in the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly, and the merger will not change its numerical strength, as the ADP had no representation in the House.
Leaders cite ideological alignment and key state issues
Explaining the rationale behind the merger, Pangu said the former ADP leaders would continue to raise key issues affecting the state under the Congress platform. These include a review of Article 371(H), concerns surrounding hydropower projects, and alleged illegal mining activities.
He also highlighted broader governance concerns such as unemployment, rising prices, corruption, and what he described as the weakening of democratic institutions.
Pangu expressed gratitude to former Chief Minister Gegong Apang for facilitating their entry into the Congress. He also thanked Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for their support.
Congress assures equal role for new entrants
The newly inducted members were formally welcomed by Bosiram Siram, president of the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), in the presence of senior party leaders and functionaries.
Siram assured the former ADP members that they would be given equal responsibilities and opportunities within the party organisation. He said their induction would help strengthen the Congress in the state and enhance its efforts to address public concerns.
The newly joined leaders also pledged to work towards transparent, inclusive, and people-centric governance in Arunachal Pradesh under the Congress banner.
