Apple Introduces AI Feature to Automatically Reset Passwords

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple has unveiled a new feature as part of its Apple Intelligence initiative during the WWDC 2026 event. This privacy-focused tool aims to assist users in managing their passwords more effectively by automatically changing weak, reused, or compromised passwords on supported websites. The initiative seeks to alleviate the burden of password management for users who may neglect to update their passwords or respond to security warnings.

This new capability will be integrated into the Passwords app with the release of iOS 27, forming part of a broader rollout of Apple Intelligence. The app’s functions are expected to simplify the user experience by not just notifying users of compromised passwords but actively addressing the issue by changing them for the user.

How the Feature Operates

The Passwords app currently serves as a repository for login credentials, passkeys, two-factor authentication codes, Wi-Fi passwords, and security alerts. At present, it can alert users if passwords are deemed weak or reused across multiple platforms, or if they have appeared in known data breaches. With the integration of Apple Intelligence in iOS 27, the process is set to become significantly more efficient.

According to Apple, the new feature will allow the Passwords app to navigate through the password-change process on supported websites automatically. This involves securely logging into the user’s account, generating a strong new password, updating the existing credentials, and saving the updated password within the Passwords app.

The company described this functionality during its keynote, emphasising that Apple Intelligence can “agentically take action on your behalf.” This means that users will be able to secure their accounts with minimal effort, eliminating the need for them to visit multiple websites individually to change passwords.

Security Considerations of the AI Feature

The introduction of an AI-based password management system raises potential security concerns. Apple has reiterated that security is a paramount aspect of this feature. The password update functionality operates using the company’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, which provides extra processing power while adhering to stringent privacy standards.

Apple states that requests sent to Private Cloud Compute are subjected to end-to-end encryption and are processed without saving any personal data. The company has assured that the information is not retained and cannot be accessed by its personnel, nor is it employed for training AI models.

The automatic password-changing feature is just one among several enhancements introduced under the Apple Intelligence umbrella at WWDC 2026. Other notable advancements include an upgraded version of Siri, capable of engaging in natural dialogue, understanding contextual nuances, and executing tasks across different applications. Additional enhancements within the Apple ecosystem encompass AI-driven functionalities in Photos, Messages, Mail, Calendar, and Safari.

Availability of the New Features

The developer betas for iOS 27 are currently available, with a public beta scheduled for release next month. Apple has indicated that the complete rollout of iOS 27, along with the various new features under the Apple Intelligence programme, will commence later this year.

With these advancements, Apple aims to enhance user experience while maintaining robust security measures, ensuring that users can effectively manage their digital identities.
