Amit Shah Announces End of Naxalism in Bastar, Highlights Vision for Development

The CSR Journal Magazine

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on May 18 that the Bastar region in Chhattisgarh is now free from Naxal influence. Shah made this declaration during an event in Jagdalpur and noted that reaching this milestone was initially viewed as an unrealistic target when it was set in January 2024. He attributed the achievement to the dedication and efforts of security forces, stating that the goal was formally established during a closed meeting on January 21, 2024, with a completion target of March 31, 2026.

Shah expressed satisfaction at the announcement, stating, “Many said it was impossible to eradicate Naxalism from the region; now we have shown that it is possible.” He reiterated the need for ongoing development in the area to ensure the welfare of communities affected by years of violence.

Plans for Development and Rehabilitation

The Union Home Minister assured residents of Bastar that there are detailed plans in place for the rehabilitation of approximately 3,000 former Naxals who have surrendered. He emphasised the importance of integrating these individuals into mainstream society through employment opportunities. Shah declared that the eradication of Naxalism necessitates a parallel commitment to the development of the region, aiming to bring Bastar on par with other states in India.

On the same day, Shah inaugurated the Shaheed Veer Gundadhur Seva Dera Jan Suvidha Kendra, a move he characterised as significant for public service. He highlighted the establishment of facilities in Netanar village, a site of historical importance linked to martyr Veer Gundadhur, as a symbol of renewed hope and progress for tribal communities.

Shah further underscored the government’s mission to provide essential services and resources to those who had been disadvantaged during the years of Naxal rule. He noted initiatives like the “Niyad Nellanar” scheme, which aims to open affordable ration shops and primary schools in every village while ensuring access to basic amenities such as safe drinking water.

Commitment to Future Development Initiatives

Looking ahead, Shah stressed the need to maintain the momentum of development. He stated that while Naxalism may have been diminished, continued efforts are required to ensure its complete eradication. The Home Minister committed to addressing historical grievances and vowed to transform the social and economic landscape of the region over the next five years.

Shah detailed plans for transforming around 200 existing camps in the region, with intentions to establish 70 of those as Service Centres aimed at tribal welfare within the next 18 months. These centres will provide essential services such as banking, the issuance of Aadhaar and ration cards, and direct access to government benefits.

The Minister concluded by reiterating the government’s unwavering commitment to the region’s upliftment. He remarked on initiatives like the Bastar Olympics to promote sports and the Bastar Pandum programme to showcase tribal culture and heritage on an international platform. Shah urged that true development will be realised when the historic injustices inflicted by Naxalism are amended and communities thrive in a new era of peace and growth.
