Allianz’s CSR Initiative Achieves Over 1,000 Tons of Plastic Waste Recovery in Thiruvananthapuram

The CSR Journal Magazine

Allianz Services India and Allianz Technology India have officially announced a significant achievement in their Plastic Waste-Free Rivers Project, having recovered over 1,000 tons of plastic waste from the rivers of Thiruvananthapuram. This initiative, launched in 2022, aims to prevent plastic from entering the Arabian Sea, effectively representing the removal of 50 million plastic bottles from local waterways. The achievement was celebrated during a formal event attended by key governmental figures and representatives of Allianz.

The project is entirely funded by Allianz Services India and Allianz Technology India, who have invested over INR 5 crores (approximately EUR 500,000) of CSR funds. This investment exemplifies the commitment of the Global Capability Centres (GCCs) to positively impact their local communities and ecosystems.

P.K. Kunhalikutty, the Minister for Industries, IT, AI and Startups, highlighted the importance of responsible corporate citizenship in fostering environmental sustainability while promoting economic growth. Other dignitaries echoed this sentiment, urging further collaborations among businesses, governmental bodies, and citizens to emulate this effective model.

Innovative Approaches to Waste Management

The Plastic Waste-Free Rivers Project employs low-cost floating barriers known as TrashBooms, strategically placed in critical waterways. Currently, fifteen TrashBoom systems are operational in various locations, actively collecting plastic waste on a daily basis. This innovative approach has proven effective in addressing the plastic debris crisis in urban environments.

Additionally, Allianz collaborates with NGO partners such as Thanal Trust and Sustera Foundation, as well as utilising technology from Germany’s Plastic Fischer. This initiative not only facilitates the removal of plastic debris but also generates local employment opportunities. Collected non-recyclable plastic is processed at Material Recovery Facilities within Thiruvananthapuram, with recyclable materials being repurposed for local usage, including the production of TrashBins installed at Veli Beach.

Despite these efforts, the global plastic pollution crisis remains alarming, with nine million tons of plastic entering the oceans each year. In Thiruvananthapuram, plastic constitutes 79 per cent of debris in significant water bodies, emphasising the urgent need for continuous action and awareness in waste management.

Future Initiatives and Community Engagement

Looking ahead, Allianz Services India and Allianz Technology India plan to launch grassroots-level initiatives in 2025 across Puthenthope, Kadinamkulam, and Veli. These new efforts will focus on preventive waste management, aiming to foster a change in community behaviour regarding waste disposal. The initiatives will involve collaboration with local residents, merchants, and municipal bodies to promote awareness and responsible waste management practices.

Employees will actively participate in cleanup drives and awareness campaigns, further solidifying the relationship between corporate actions and community welfare. By aligning their efforts with local governance, Allianz aims to enhance the impact of their initiatives on the environment.

This project underscores the role of Thiruvananthapuram’s GCCs in leading environmental initiatives that yield verifiable outcomes. By addressing the issue of plastic waste, these industry-led efforts contribute to mitigating urban flood risks while improving the quality of life for residents, thereby attracting talent to the area. The successful model developed in Thiruvananthapuram is now being implemented in other Indian cities, showcasing the potential for scalable impact through such partnerships.
