Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has asserted that the Indian government’s handling of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak highlights the need for substantial reforms in the education sector. On July 25, during a post on X, he expressed that superficial changes will not suffice. Yadav’s comments came in light of ongoing discussions regarding the examination’s alleged irregularities.

Yadav remarked, “When your ‘essence’ remains, the ‘plunder’ will continue!” He emphasised that merely displaying a façade without addressing systemic issues would not bring about the necessary changes. His statement reflects a broader concern regarding educational policies and their implementation in the country.

The Samajwadi Party chief’s statement comes as the NEET controversy continues to draw attention. He has been vocal in his demands for comprehensive structural reform, arguing that prompt actions are not enough if the foundational problems are ignored.

Government Actions in Response to Allegations

In response to the NEET paper leak allegations, the Indian government has taken steps to address the situation. Reports indicate that 47 senior officials of the National Testing Agency (NTA) have been dismissed from their roles as part of these actions. Additionally, an FIR is expected to be filed to investigate the matter further.

Earlier, two secretaries of the NTA lost their positions amid mounting scrutiny. The investigation has gained urgency, with promises of stringent actions against those found responsible for any irregularities. The government aims to restore credibility in the examination process, which has faced considerable public outcry.

Yadav’s critique of the government’s response is consistent with his party’s position that deeper-rooted issues must be resolved for effective reform. The situation around NEET has triggered significant discussion regarding the integrity of educational assessments in India.

Ongoing Protests Demand Systemic Change

The controversy surrounding the NEET examination has catalysed widespread protests across the nation. Demonstrators have taken to the streets, calling for more transparency and accountability in the examination system. Additionally, there are growing demands for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Akhilesh Yadav has intensified his rhetoric against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), labelling it as the “root” cause of the numerous challenges currently faced by the country. He utilised a metaphor to convey that treating superficial symptoms will not resolve the underlying issues.

In his messages on X, Yadav expressed, “When the disease is in the ROOT, no one is going to buy treating the FRUIT.” He urged for a change in governance, advocating for the removal of the BJP from power with the slogan: “NO FAST TRACK; BJP GO BACK!” These sentiments resonate with the frustrations of many who seek significant change in India’s education policy and governance.
