Seven Professions Facing Decline

Several jobs might witness significant reductions or transformations in their nature by the end of the next decade. The following roles have been identified as particularly vulnerable:

Data entry operators face severe risks, as tasks involving copying, sorting, and verifying data can be performed more efficiently by AI systems. Reports worldwide indicate that data entry is one of the fastest-declining job categories due to these advancements.

Customer support representatives are experiencing noteworthy changes. Traditionally secure roles in call centers are evolving, with AI-driven chatbots and voice technologies beginning to manage customer inquiries end-to-end. Consequently, a substantial portion of these interactions are projected to be automated, leading to a decrease in entry-level hiring opportunities.

Basic content writing roles are also at risk, as AI tools can generate routine texts such as product descriptions, SEO articles, and summaries in a matter of seconds. The value now lies in original thought, storytelling, and editorial insight rather than mere content generation.

In the financial sector, bookkeepers and junior accountants are increasingly facing job reductions due to automation tools. These technologies can efficiently handle invoices, payroll, and tax computations with minimal human input. As a result, there is a noticeable shift from entry-level finance roles to strategic and advisory positions.

The manufacturing industry is not exempt from the AI revolution, which is altering traditional assembly line jobs. In India, manufacturing has been identified as one of the most susceptible sectors, with many routine tasks already being automated or enhanced through robotics.

Retail cashiers are witnessing a similar trend, with self-checkout machines and AI-enabled payment systems diminishing the requirement for human cashiers. This shift is observed globally as retail outlets opt for speed and efficiency over conventional service roles.

Entry-level IT support and testing positions are also under threat as automated tools handle routine coding, testing, and Level-1 support roles. NITI Aayog has signaled that these jobs are at considerable risk of being rendered redundant unless there is an emphasis on reskilling.

India stands to gain millions of new employment opportunities in areas related to AI, data science, and human-AI collaborations over the coming years, provided that skills training keeps pace with technological advancements. The trajectory suggests that jobs centered around routine tasks are diminishing, while roles necessitating creativity, empathy, and complex decision-making are gaining prominence. AI does not merely replace human roles; it shifts the focus from repetitive labor to unpredictable tasks. Future job security will increasingly depend on individuals’ abilities to adapt and collaborate effectively with intelligent machines.
