Agra BJP Councillor Cuts Birthday Cake in Drain to Highlight Civic Neglect

The CSR Journal Magazine

An unusual protest against alleged neglect of sanitation facilities was staged by a BJP councillor in Agra, who celebrated his birthday by cutting a cake while standing in a drain. Kishan Nayak, representing Ward 12, marked the occasion in the Langde Ki Chowki drain in New Vijay Nagar Colony, in an effort to draw attention to the unsatisfactory conditions in his ward. The event has gained prominence, particularly after the footage circulated widely on social media.

Allegations of Poor Sanitation Conditions

The drain in question spans approximately two kilometres, with a significant portion—about 65 per cent—reportedly buried underground. Residents have voiced concerns that these underground sections remain uncleaned for over 14 years, resulting in severe silt accumulation. Reports indicate that accumulated silt of one to three feet is present in various areas of the drain, while the visible portions are also in a deplorable state.

Nayak has claimed to have made several attempts to address these issues with the Agra Municipal Corporation, having lodged approximately 12 complaints. His efforts included engaging with various officials, including those in the health department and the Smart City management, yet he reported that no substantive actions were initiated to rectify the situation.

In light of the inaction, the councillor, accompanied by local residents and supporters, arrived at the dirty drain on Thursday. A table was set up there, adorned with a birthday cake, which Nayak promptly cut to symbolise his protest. Residents gathered around, vocalising their discontent with the Municipal Corporation and the Smart City authorities.

Public Response to the Protest

Nayak has criticized the Civic authorities, remarking that the sanitation conditions in the slum areas persist despite the government’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan initiative. He pointed out that his numerous communications, whether through letters or meetings, have yielded no lasting solutions to the sanitation issues plaguing his ward.

Furthermore, Nayak recounted his interactions with various officials, including the Assistant Municipal Commissioner and the Municipal Health Officer, even mentioning that he had brought these concerns to the attention of the Mayor. However, he expressed disappointment that no actions followed these discussions, raising concerns about the responsiveness of civic governance, especially considering the needs of ordinary citizens.
