With this Road Safety Week, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways- Nitin Gadkari is asking corporate firms to come forward and contribute to issues relating to road safety. The ministry intends to write to corporate companies including all major automobile companies to promote road safety as a part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes.
Today marks the beginning of 28th Road Safety Week in India. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is observing the awareness week from January 9th to 15th. Road safety walk was inaugurated by Gadkari from India Gate in the capital city today.
This year, the ministry is focusing on contribution from the India Inc in the form of CSR initiatives for road safety. On 10th of January, Gadkari will also attend a conclave being organised to involve Indian corporate houses and enlist their support for the cause of promoting road safety. This will be followed by a meeting of NGOs on 11th January. NGOs would be called upon to participate in the Ministry’s efforts to create awareness about road safety.
In his speech last week, Gadkari said he will ask companies to provide ambulances for highways and will also request them to spend on upgrading the exiting trauma centers and setting up new ones along the national highways.
“I am going to write to all corporates asking them to spend some funds towards improving road safety in the country,” Gadkari said.
Gadkari said that he would also requests religious and spiritual trusts to do the same.
He said his target was to reduce road deaths in the country by half. Every year almost 1.5 lakh people are killed in India in road accidents.
The Ministry launched two mobile apps – e-Challan and m-Parivahan to promote road safety today using technology. e-Challan is a comprehensive digital solution for transport enforcement and traffic police for overall better traffic management.
m-Parivahan is a citizen centric app that will facilitate access to various transport related services. The app provides for virtual driving license and registration certificate through back end connection to Transport National Register.
