Union Home Minister Amit Shah presided over the third meeting of the Governing Body of the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) on September 10, 2026, in New Delhi. During this meeting, he emphasised the importance of establishing dedicated cells within all relevant departments to enhance infrastructure resilience in both urban and rural areas against challenges posed by climate change.

Shah reiterated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of achieving ‘zero casualties’ in disasters, NIDM has transformed into a vital centre for research, innovation, policy support, training, and collaborative efforts in disaster management.

He specifically instructed that every designated department should implement strategies to develop villages and cities that are better equipped to withstand disasters linked to climate change and global warming.

Significant Contributions and Initiatives of NIDM

According to the National Institute of Disaster Management, Madhup Vyas, the Executive Director, welcomed the Home Minister and highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing training, capacity building, and research in disaster management. These efforts include providing knowledge development opportunities tailored to the needs of various stakeholders.

During the meeting, members of the Governing Body were present, which included senior officials such as Govind Mohan, Home Secretary; Krishna S. Vatsa, Member & Head of NDMA India; and Naresh Pal Gangwar, Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, among others.

This assembly allowed for a comprehensive discussion regarding the roles and responsibilities of the NIDM in light of emerging environmental risks, thereby facilitating a unified approach to disaster management across the country.

In addition to the formal discussions, Home Minister Amit Shah engaged with senior officials and members of the Institute to gain insights into NIDM’s strategies and operations in disaster management, including training and capacity building programmes.
