The leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP), Akhilesh Yadav, has raised concerns regarding the Uttar Pradesh government’s alleged attempts to limit the party’s activities. Speaking in Lucknow on September 10, Yadav asserted that the government is failing to address critical issues such as floods and environmental conservation while simultaneously restricting the SP’s initiatives.

Yadav questioned the rationale behind the government’s actions, asking why it appears to be threatened by the SP’s programmes. He suggested that such actions are indicative of a government that is losing its grip. “Perhaps no one has ever witnessed such a poor government in a democracy,” he remarked, highlighting what he perceives as encroachments on public rights.

He specifically noted the deployment of police forces in various districts intended to thwart SP events, particularly around Teachers’ Day, when the party intended to honour educators and engage with students. “This government is on its way out; that is the resolve we have committed ourselves to,” Yadav stated, expressing his views on the future of the current administration.

Denial of Permissions for Party Events

Yadav further discussed an instance where the party faced denial of permission for an event in Bulandshahr. He claimed that local authorities initially assured SP members that permission would be granted. However, he alleged that this approval was subsequently rescinded, citing concerns related to the month of Sawan, known for its religious significance in the region.

Despite scheduled engagements and ongoing communication with the District Magistrate and other officials, Yadav reported that the party still found itself without the necessary permissions for the intended venue. He emphasised that the event was designed to engage with party workers and media to discuss key policies for a future SP government, including district-specific issues to be incorporated into their manifesto.

In yet another claimed setback, Yadav reported that a request to establish a helipad was also denied, which he attributed to waterlogging at the proposed site in the Reserve Police Lines ground. This, according to Yadav, highlights the government’s inability to facilitate even basic logistical support for political engagement.

Concerns over Flood Management and Environmental Issues

Akhilesh Yadav also took the opportunity to criticise the state government on its handling of flood management. He accused officials of failing to fulfil assurances regarding the construction of riverbanks and other measures aimed at mitigating flood-related damage. “The government has kept claiming that it would resolve the flood problem; however, it made false promises regarding the construction of riverbanks,” he stated.

According to Yadav, the inadequacy of government measures has resulted in persistent flood issues that affect residents and infrastructure. He contended that the mismanagement of flood risks represents a broader failure of governance in the region, undermining public trust.

Moreover, the SP leader highlighted the party’s intention to address environmental concerns in their upcoming election manifesto. He specifically mentioned the need for initiatives aimed at the preservation of Lakhimpur’s forests, characterising them as a unique and historic ecosystem deserving of protection.
