The Bangladesh authorities have permitted jailed Hindu rights leader Chinmoy Krishna Das to leave prison for five hours to attend his mother’s funeral. This decision arrived on Thursday after a request was made by his family following the passing of his mother, Sandhya Rani Dhar, earlier that day. She reportedly died during medical treatment at a hospital located in Hathazari.

Das, who is a Hindu monk, has been incarcerated since November 2024 on sedition charges for allegedly showing disrespect towards the national flag. As of now, he remains in prison despite multiple cases filed against him, totaling six criminal charges. Although the High Court has granted bail for four of these cases, he cannot be released due to the pending status of the remaining charges against him.

Regulatory Compliance for Release

The release on parole was orchestrated by Chattogram District Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia. He reportedly acted upon receiving an application from Das’s brother regarding the death of their mother. The commissioner stated, “Following an application by his brother over the death of his mother, we have passed an order to release Chinmoy Krishna from jail on parole for five hours in accordance with the law.”

Further confirmation of this decision came from Swatantra Gauranga Das Brahmachari, the vice-president of ISKCON’s Prabartak Sri Krishna Temple. He indicated that the application had been finalised, enabling Das’s temporary release. Gauranga Das Brahmachari elaborated, “He will have to travel to Hathazari, attend his mother’s funeral and return within that period.”

Chinmoy Krishna Das has been implicated in several additional legal matters since his arrest, including serious accusations such as murder and attempted murder, alongside charges of vandalism. The status of his bail in the sedition charge remains suspended, while the proceedings in the murder case are currently in progress at the Chattogram Speedy Trial Tribunal.

Broader Context of Legal Challenges

One significant case associated with Das involves the murder of government prosecutor Saiful Islam Alif. The prosecutor was violently killed by activists protesting Das’s arrest. This incident amplifies the gravity of the charges facing him and portrays the turbulent atmosphere surrounding his detainment.

Prior to his arrest, Das had affiliations with ISKCON, and he now serves as a spokesperson for the Hindu Sammilito Sanatan Jagaran Jote. Following a period of civil unrest and the ousting of Prime Minister Hasina, the group organised various rallies within Bangladesh in 2024. Their campaigns centred around calls for enhanced minority rights and protection against civil disturbances.

Currently, Das’s parole remains strictly limited to the duration necessary for attending his mother’s funeral, highlighting the ongoing legal complications he faces. As the court cases continue, his family and supporters are left to navigate the consequences of his entanglement within the legal system, placing focus on the broader implications for minority rights in Bangladesh amidst ongoing unrest.
