“78 Per Cent Of Indians Use AI At Work To Survive, Not Innovate”: ETS Report

The recent ETS Human Progress Report 2026 indicates that artificial intelligence has become a crucial element in the everyday professional landscape of India. As the report shows, 42 per cent of tasks performed by Indian workers involve directing AI tools, surpassing the global average of 32 per cent. This statistic reveals that a significant proportion of employees now find their roles intertwined with AI, whether through automation or decision support mechanisms.

Workers Rely on AI For Competitiveness

The report highlights a critical perspective on AI usage, revealing that around 78 per cent of Indian workers resort to AI tools primarily to maintain a competitive edge in the job market, rather than from a desire to innovate. In contrast, the global figure for this necessity stands at 65 per cent. This growing reliance on AI signals a profound transformation in workplace culture, where AI usage has shifted from being considered a supplementary skill to a fundamental requirement for professional relevance.

As more roles depend on AI capabilities, professionals are acknowledging that innovation is no longer the main focus; rather, it is about keeping pace with the evolving demands of their industries. This shift underscores the pressures employees face to adapt, making AI proficiency an essential part of their job descriptions.

The rising expectation among Indian workers regarding AI competency is evident, with many feeling the need to stay ahead in an increasingly competitive market. The emphasis on using AI exclusively as a tool for survival reinforces the urgency for workers to acquire these skills to avoid obsolescence.

Growing Demand for AI Skill Verification

The presence of AI in the workplace has prompted a desire among employees to benchmark their abilities in this domain. Approximately 89 per cent of respondents in India expressed a need for clearer standards to evaluate their AI skills compared to peers in their sectors. This sentiment reveals rising uncertainty about their qualifications and the fear of falling behind if they do not meet market expectations.

This demand for skill verification indicates that employees are not just eager to learn about AI but are also keen on affirming their competencies against established criteria. The urgency for validation highlights a new trend in career development, pushing professionals to seek resources that can formally recognise their capabilities in AI.

The focus on benchmarking underlines the necessity for structured assessments and training that can properly equip individuals with the skills required to thrive in an AI-enhanced workspace. This could also lead to the development of industry-wide standards that create a clearer pathway for skill progression.

Affordability and Government Expectations

Despite the increasing pressure to acquire AI skills, affordability remains a significant challenge for the workforce. Approximately 83 per cent of Indian respondents are concerned about their ability to fund the necessary training. This concern highlights a substantial gap between the rising demand for AI proficiency and the accessibility of relevant educational resources.

Moreover, the report reflects a strong expectation from employees for governmental support in skill development initiatives. An overwhelming 97 per cent of participants believe that the responsibility for facilitating training does not rest solely on individuals but should include government intervention. This may involve promoting accessible educational pathways and financial sponsorships for workforce readiness.

The dependency on government support suggests that, in addition to personal effort, institutional backing will play a crucial role in bridging the skill gap in the context of AI. Addressing these concerns could assist in creating a more equitable landscape where all workers can gain the necessary skills to succeed in a rapidly evolving job environment.
