132 Deaths Reported in DR Congo and Uganda Due to Ebola Outbreak

The CSR Journal Magazine

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported that the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda has resulted in a total of 528 suspected cases as of May 18. Among these, 132 fatalities have been confirmed. This alarming data highlights the urgent public health crisis being faced in these regions.

According to the WHO, 668 contacts linked to the suspected cases have been identified. Out of these, 541 contacts are based in DRC, while 127 are from Uganda. The organisation noted that contact tracing remains a significant challenge in certain areas of DRC, primarily due to ongoing insecurity and restrictions on movement.

Furthermore, the WHO has classified this Ebola outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, as a public health emergency of international concern. This designation underscores the seriousness of the situation and the need for coordinated global response efforts.

Response Measures by WHO

In an effort to combat this outbreak, the WHO has deployed a team of 38 experts to the affected areas in DRC. This includes 20 personnel from the Ministry of Health and 18 from the WHO, who have been sent from Kinshasa to Bunia. Their primary objective is to assist in managing the response operations effectively.

Moreover, over 17 tonnes of emergency supplies have been dispatched to DRC. These supplies include essential items such as personal protective equipment, medical supplies, tents, stretchers, and medicines. The timely provision of these resources is critical to supporting frontline health workers in their efforts.

To further enhance the response to the outbreak, WHO is expanding its laboratory capacity in DRC. This involves the deployment of laboratory teams and mobile laboratories to facilitate increased local testing and diagnostic activities. The organisation is also prioritising risk communication and community engagement to ensure that affected communities are informed and actively involved in the response efforts.

India Monitoring the Ebola Situation

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry of India is closely monitoring the situation regarding the Ebola outbreak occurring in DRC and Uganda. Ministry officials, including those from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), have been actively reviewing developments and have initiated precautionary public health measures.

A senior official from the Health Ministry reiterated on Monday that India has not recorded any cases of Ebola. The official stated that the current risk of the disease spreading to India remains minimal. Nevertheless, the ministry has decided to take extra precautions to strengthen surveillance and readiness at points of entry and within the public health system.

These precautionary measures demonstrate India’s commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that robust systems are in place to handle any potential threats. Authorities are working diligently to maintain vigilance in light of the ongoing outbreak in neighbouring countries.
