11 Maoists Surrender in Odisha, Carrying ₹63 Lakh Bounty

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Sunday, a group of eleven Maoists, collectively carrying a bounty of Rs 63.3 lakh, surrendered to the Odisha Police in Kalahandi district. This significant event included the surrender of a substantial cache of weapons and ammunition. The police reported that these individuals were involved in activities across Kalahandi, Rayagada, and Kandhamal.

Background of the Surrendering Maoists

Among the eleven surrendering Maoists, one is reported to be from Maharashtra, while the remaining ten hail from Chhattisgarh. Their surrender marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to curb Maoist activity in the region, which authorities have been actively addressing in recent years.

Compensation and Incentives

As a result of their surrender, the Maoists will be eligible to receive a total compensation of Rs 1.2 crore. This amount includes the Rs 63.3 lakh bounty that was placed on them, along with an additional Rs 60 lakh in cash incentives. Such measures are part of a broader initiative aimed at encouraging Maoists to abandon their insurgency and reintegrate into society.

Weapons Confiscated

In the course of their surrender, the group handed over an arsenal of 11 weapons. This cache included an AK-47, an INSAS rifle, and four Self-Loading Rifles (SLRs). The confiscation of these weapons is regarded as a significant achievement for the police in their ongoing operations against Maoist insurgency in the state.

Impact on Maoist Presence in Odisha

With this latest development, authorities have stated that the number of armed Maoists in Odisha has now decreased to approximately 15. This reduction is seen as a positive sign in the continuous efforts to diminish the presence and influence of Maoist groups in the region.

Law Enforcement Response

Law enforcement officials have expressed optimism regarding the declining numbers of active Maoists in Odisha. The police plan to maintain their ongoing operations and initiatives aimed at promoting peace and stability in areas affected by Maoist activity. They continue to encourage individuals involved in such groups to surrender and take advantage of various government schemes designed to facilitate their reintegration.

Future Perspectives

The surrender of these eleven Maoists illustrates the challenges still faced by security personnel in combating Maoist insurgency. However, it also underscores the potential for further progress if similar efforts are made in the future. Authorities remain committed to reducing violence and fostering an environment conducive to development and peace across the state.
