Apple Prepares for iPhone Price Increases

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple is reportedly gearing up to raise the prices of its iPhones, as indicated by a recent report. The anticipated increase is attributed to escalating expenses related to memory and components essential for manufacturing the smartphones. Although no specific timeline for the price adjustment has been disclosed, the report suggests that a rise in prices is now unavoidable.

This impending increase is significant given that Apple has already raised the prices of several of its products in recent months, including Macs and iPads. These prior hikes varied considerably in amount, indicating that the company is responding to similar cost pressures that now seem to be affecting the iPhone lineup.

The details surrounding the amount of the forthcoming increase remain uncertain. According to, Apple has been monitoring competitive pricing trends from other technology giants, notably Samsung and Google, both of which have recently raised the prices of their flagship models by approximately $100. Should Apple adopt a comparable strategy, it is speculated that the iPhone 18 Pro could debut with a starting price of $1,199 in the United States, as opposed to the current price of $1,099, marking an approximate increase of 9 per cent.

Implications for Indian Market

In India, rumours suggest that iPhone prices could increase by as much as Rs 10,000, a possibility that may not sit well with Apple enthusiasts in the region. The company has already implemented substantial price changes for other product categories, such as MacBook Air and Mac Studio, which saw increases of $200 and $500, respectively. Similarly, the iPad Air was adjusted up by $150, resulting in some products costing nearly Rs 1 lakh more than before.

Apple’s challenges stem from the same pressures affecting the production of smartphones. Rising costs in memory and various essential components have been widely reported. There have been warnings about potential pressure on gross margins, suggesting that the company may not fully pass on these rising costs to consumers yet. Nevertheless, the iPhone’s established customer base offers Apple more latitude for implementing price hikes compared to other product categories.

The company is also said to be exploring the possibility of a new subscription programme that could alleviate the burden of higher costs for consumers through manageable monthly payments, further illustrating the strategic measures Apple may take in response to these trends.

Which Models Might Be Affected?

Bloomberg has not specified which iPhone models will see changes in pricing. Following the trends established with its other devices, it is anticipated that a broad spectrum within the iPhone lineup may be impacted. The newer iPhone 17 models, including the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, could all be subject to price adjustments.

Models from the previous iPhone 16 series, such as the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, as well as the Pro variants, may also see revised prices. The status of older models, including the iPhone 13 and iPhone 15, regarding potential price changes, remains uncertain.

To provide context, the current starting prices for the iPhone series in India are as follows: iPhone 16 at Rs 69,900, iPhone 16 Plus at Rs 79,900, iPhone 16 Pro at Rs 1,19,900, and the Pro Max variant at Rs 1,44,900. The newer iPhone 17 series starts at Rs 82,900 for the base model, with other models priced accordingly.

Though Apple has yet to officially announce any price increases or specify when they would take effect, the ongoing discussions and reports indicate that significant changes may soon unfold in the pricing structure of iPhones, further reflecting the company’s ongoing adjustments to market dynamics.
