Youth Suffers 35% Severe Burns After Toilet Seat Explodes in Greater Noida

A very shocking and unusual incident has come to light from the Greater Noida area recently. A 20-year-old man suffered severe burn injuries, burning over 35 percent of his body. This comes after a western-style toilet in his home exploded. The explosion was reportedly due to a buildup of methane gas in the toilet. The alleged incident occurred around 3 PM on Saturday at house number C-364 in Sector 36, Greater Noida.

Explosion Occurred After Flushing Toilet

The victim, Ashu Nagar, was using the bathroom when the explosion happened, stated the family members. Upon pressing the flush button, the toilet seat reportedly burst with a loud bang, sparking a fire. Ashu sustained multiple serious injuries to his face and body.

He was immediately rushed to the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS). The doctors confirmed he had suffered 35% burn injuries.

No Mobile phones were used during incident

Victim’s father, Sunil Pradhan, stated that his son was not using any mobile phone or electronic device when the incident occurred. This revelation ruled out theories related to gadget or electronic device explosions. Furthermore, all the other household electronics, including the air conditioner, were functioning normally at the time. This further ruled out electrical faults in connection to the incident.

“The blast left Ashu with severe burn injuries to his face and body. He was rushed to the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida, where doctors confirmed he had suffered 35 per cent burns,” he said.

Methane Gas Accumulation the Likely Cause

After all the possibilities were ruled out, investigation was conducted on scene. Initial findings suggest that methane gas may have accumulated in the toilet bowl. The experts suggest that methane gas accumulates due to a clogged or poor drainage system.

They also point out that such gas build ups are very common in poorly maintained or poorly ventilated plumbing systems. A spark, though its exact source remains unknown, could have ignited the gas, causing the explosion.

Concerns Over Ageing Sewage Infrastructure

Reacting to the incident a local resident Harinder Bhati raised concerns over the state of the area’s plumbing and sewage systems. “Pipes here are not just old, but they haven’t been cleaned in years. Choked pipes can lead to the accumulation of gas, which can explode under pressure,” he said.

Greater Noida Authority Claims No Systemic Issues

AP Verma, a senior manager at the Greater Noida Authority, confirmed that an inspection of the local sewage infrastructure revealed no irregularities. “The system is clean and functioning normally. It appears that the explosion might have resulted from some internal problem within the house,” he said, without elaborating on what the internal issue might be.

Experts Warn of Hidden Dangers in Old Plumbing

A chemistry professor commenting on the case said that methane gas accumulation is a real hazard in homes with ageing or poorly ventilated sewage systems. If not addressed, such buildups can lead to dangerous and unexpected accidents in the future.

To avoid such incidents regular maintenance of domestic plumbing and sewage systems, especially in older residential areas must be conducted. Authorities and homeowners are being urged to conduct routine checks to prevent such dangerous occurrences.
